According to the present invention, a filter body for collecting particulates is constituted of a fiber laminate material produced by laminating a fiber material comprising a core material in the form of a fiber, and a covering layer of a material different from that of the core material formed around the outer periphery of the core material by coating. The core material of the fiber material is selected from among inorganic fibers such as glass or ceramic fibers containing alumina, and heat-resistant alloy fibers each made of a heat-resistant alloy selected from among Ti-Al alloys, Fe alloys containing at least one of Mo, Cr and Ni, and Fe-Cr-Al-Y alloys. The covering layer is made of a material selected from among silicon carbide ceramics respectively derived from polytitanocarbosilane, polysilazane and polycarbosilane, thermoplastic materials, silicon carbide ceramics such as Si-C, Si-Ti-C-O and Si-C-O or silicon nitride ceramics such as Si-N-C-O, alumina ceramics, and zirconia ceramics.

A muffler-filter apparatus (36) having a particulate trap using filter tubes (38) with high temperature filter materials, like fiber in the form of yarn, woven yarn mat, or a non-woven, random array fiber mat, or various foams. Filter tubes (38) have various structural configurations and are regenerated by axial propagation using ring heaters or stub rod heaters, by heating the entire length of the filter tube (38) with a rod heater or some other full-length heater configuration. For regeneration, exhaust flow is bypassed using various valve configurations including a poppet valve (128), a shutter valve, or a tubular valve. Filter tube (38) filters may also be self-regenerated by the heat from the exhaust gases as controlled by a throttle valve or on inclusion of fuel additives which lower particulate ignition temperature.

A filter composed in such a manner that conductive filter media (21) to (28) are spirally wound with separating plates (31) to (38) interposed therebetween and the filter media (21) to (28) are bonded to each other in a double leaved form at neighboring ends thereof so that they may be opened in the direction of flow of gas and fine particles in the gas may be trapped when the gas passes through the media (21) to (28). The filter media (21) to (28) are connected to a central electrode (41) provided in the center of the windings thereof and to an outer cylindrical electrode (42) provided on the outer peripheral part of the windings, with heating electric current supplied thereto.

Self-heating filter

A soot filter for diesel engines is described, having an inlet for introduction of exhaust gases, an outlet and a filter zone situated between inlet and outlet, which filter zone is provided with a multiplicity of tube-shaped porous ceramic filter cartridges or filter cylinders, through the cylindrical walls of which the exhaust gas enters radially and through the axial inner space of which the exhaust gas leaves axially, the ends of the filter cartridges or filter cylinders being elastically mounted and sealed radially by means of a casing of metal knitted fabric, metal honeycomb, metal netting or metal mesh and axially by means of a disc.
