Journal ArticleDOI

Sustainability Science and Engineering: The Emergence of a New Metadiscipline

TL;DR: It is clear that a focus on green engineering that employs pollution prevention and industrial ecology alone are not sufficient to achieve sustainability, because even systems with efficient material and energy use can overwhelm the carrying capacity of a region or lead to other socially unacceptable outcomes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Systematic Framework for Environmentally Conscious Chemical Process Design: Early and Detailed Design Stages

TL;DR: This paper presents a systematic and hierarchical approach for incorporating environmental considerations into all stages of chemical process design and shows the n-butane route was shown to be superior to the benzene route in both the raw material cost and environmental impact.
Journal ArticleDOI

Design Guidance for Chemical Processes Using Environmental and Economic Assessments

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide design procedures and guidance for optimizing chemical processes simultaneously based on economic and environmental aspects, including a process to recover/recycle VOCs from a gaseous waste stream and optimum heat-exchanger network design.
Journal ArticleDOI

A screening methodology for improved solvent selection using economic and environmental assessments

TL;DR: There are many approaches developed for identifying the best solvents, including the use of the Hansen solubility parameters, activity coefficients, toxicity properties, flammability characteristics, and methods based on structure-activity relationships.
Journal ArticleDOI

Uncertainty Analysis for Toxicity Assessment of Chemical Process Designs

TL;DR: In this article, an uncertainty analysis for toxicity assessment of chemical process designs was presented, which generated representative normalized standard errors for several measured environmental properties (Henry's law constant, octanol-water partition coefficient, hydroxyl radical reaction rate constant, and lethal concentration for human inhalation toxicity) from a subset of high production volume chemicals.
