Effects of Optimism on Work Satisfaction Among Nurses: A Mediation Model Through Work-Family Conflict

Analysis of the resilience level and associated factors among patients with lumbar disc herniation

Objective Cervical spondylosis (CS) is a potential stressor threatening mental health among affected individuals. This study was to analyze resilience level and associated factors among cervical spondylosis (CS) patients, and to explore the underlying mechanism of anxiety based on resilience-focused psychological variables. Methods Resilience Scale-14 (RS-14), Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Herth Hope Index (HHI), Revised Life Orientation Test (LOT-R), Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10) were used in this cross-sectional investigation among 250 CS patients. Results The score of resilience was 65.58 ± 16.14. Hierarchical linear regression analysis revealed that hope, optimism, perceived social support, perceived stress, and whether having comorbid chronic diseases were the independent associates of resilience among CS patients, which explained 63.9% of the total variance. The structural equation model showed that hope, optimism, perceived social support and perceived stress affected anxiety via resilience, and hope and optimism also had direct effects on anxiety. Conclusion Chinese patients with CS had moderate level of mental resilience, which was independently related to hope, optimism, perceived social support, perceived stress, and whether having comorbid chronic diseases. Resilience played a mediating role between various psychological variables and anxiety. Improving the level of resilience, hope, optimism and perceived social support and reducing the level of perceived stress are important strategies to reduce anxiety level. Relevant healthcare professionals should put more focus on the mental problems of Chinese CS patients and help maintain good psychological status by improving their resilience and associated psychological variables thereof.

Resilience mediates the influence of hope, optimism, social support, and stress on anxiety severity among Chinese patients with cervical spondylosis

Introduction Nurse job satisfaction, defined as the positive emotional state experienced by nurses regarding their profession, factors related to job performance and outcomes, can affect their career planning and development. Grit, defined as an individual’s relentless effort and enduring enthusiasm for long-term goals, is essential for developing nurses’ competence, increasing job satisfaction, and reducing the willingness to leave the profession. The present study aims to explore the correlation between grit and job satisfaction, whether perceived stress could act as a mediator of the relationship and whether optimism moderated the mediating effect among nurses working in hospitals in southwest China. Methods The cross-sectional study utilized self-reported data gathered from 709 nurses in southwest China. To analyze mediating and moderating effects, bootstrapping regressions were conducted. Results Perceived pressure mediated the relationship between grit and job satisfaction (indirect effect = 0.195, 95%CI [0.145,0.250]). Furthermore, moderated mediated analysis revealed that optimism moderated grit’s impact on perceived stress (moderating effect = 0.036, 95% CI [0.010, 0.061]). Discussion Low levels of grit might reduce nurses’ job satisfaction as their perceived stress levels increase. However, optimism among nurses could diminish this negative effect. Nursing managers should actively seek to improve the grit and optimism of hospital nurses while reducing their perceived pressure, thereby improving job satisfaction.

The influence of grit on nurse job satisfaction: Mediating effects of perceived stress and moderating effects of optimism

Aim This study aimed to examine the relationship between optimism, core self-evaluations, positive coping strategies, and job satisfaction for Chinese specialist nurses. Methods A cross-sectional design was used. Two hundred and seventy-eight Chinese specialist nurses answered the Chinese Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire, the Chinese Revised Life Orientation Test, the Chinese Core Self-Evaluations Scale, and the Chinese Simplified Coping Style Scale. Descriptive analysis, independent-sample T-tests, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson correlation analyses, and bootstrap method were conducted to analyze data. Results Total effect (c = 0.860, SE = 0.143, 95% CI 0.579-1.142) of optimism on job satisfaction was significant. The path through single mediation of core self-evaluations (point estimate = 0.165; 95% CI 0.041-0.318), the path through the single mediation of positive coping (point estimate = 0.124; 95% CI 0.042-0.254), and the path through both mediators (point estimate = 0.033; 95% CI 0.005-0.085) were all statistically significant. The total indirect effect was also statistically significant (point estimate = 0.322; 95% CI 0.151-0.535). Conclusions This study concluded that optimism was first sequentially associated with core self-evaluations and then associated with positive coping strategies, which was in turn related to job satisfaction of Chinese specialist nurses. Clinical nursing administrators should take measures that focus on improving specialist nurse job satisfaction to further improve their retention rates.
