Hydrogen bonds in polymer blends

The main development in macromolecular complexation in aqueous media due to hydrogen bonding over the last decade has been a better understanding of the process of complex formation. Meanwhile an ever growing interest has occurred in introducing hydrogen bonding into the polymers which originally lack donor or acceptor groups. For such polymer solutions it has been demonstrated that the transition from separated coils to complex aggregates takes place when the content of introduced interaction sites reaches a certain level. For the blends with controllable hydrogen bonding in the solid state, the relevant experiments have shown that immiscibility-miscibility-complexation transitions occur upon progressive increase in the density of hydrogen bonding.

Interpolymer Complexation and Miscibility Enhancement by Hydrogen Bonding

Hydrogen bonding in polymer blends is a topic of great interest to polymer scientists because such systems have many potential applications. Introducing functional groups to one component to make it capable of forming hydrogen bonds to another, thereby enhancing the miscibility of otherwise immiscible blends, is one of the major achievements during the past 20 years of polymer science. The Painter–Coleman association model generally describes these interactions accurately. This Review discusses in detail the effects of hydrogen bonding on the miscibility and thermal properties of polymer blend systems.

Synthesis and (co)polymerization of monofluoro, difluoro, trifluorostyrene and ((trifluorovinyl)oxy)benzene

We have prepared a series of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-based copolymers through free radical copolymerizations of methyl methacrylate in the presence of the either 2-vinyl-4,6-diamino-1,3,5-triazine (VDAT) or vinylbenzylthymine (VBT). Using 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, solid state 13C NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), one- and two-dimensional Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and viscosity measurements, we investigated the thermal properties of and hydrogen-bonding interactions within blends of the two copolymers poly(2-vinyl-4,6-diamino-1,3,5- triazine-co-methyl methacrylate) (PVDAT-co-PMMA) and poly(vinylbenzylthymine-co-methyl methacrylate) (PVBT-co-PMMA). Complementary Multiple Hydrogen-Bonding Interactions Increase the Glass Transition Temperatures to PMMA Copolymer Mixtures

The miscibility of styrene copolymers of 4-vinylbenzenephosphonic acid diethyl ester (PSVBDEP) with poly(p-vinylphenol) (PVPh) was studied by using DSC, FTIR, 31 P NMR, and 13 C NMR. Results indicated that the copolymer containing 4.3 mol % VBDEP units was immiscible with PVPh. For the PSVBDEP-7.5/PVPh blends, a single T g was observed when the content of PSVDEP-7.5 was at least 60wt %. Mixing of PSVDEP-13.3 with PVPh caused mutual precipitation in tetrahydrofuran. The complexes exhibited a single T g . Three hydrogen bond donors, hexafluoroisopropyl alcohol, phenol, and tert-butyl alcohol, were used to «calibrate» the strength of the -C 6 H 4 P(O)(OC 2 H 5 ) 3 group as an acceptor, and the characteristic parameter in the enthalpy-frequency shift relationship was determined
