A 60-GHz active microstrip antenna design comprising a three-stage pseudomorphic high electron mobility transistor amplifier integrated with a high gain antenna on an alumina substrate is presented. The amplifier has 18-dB gain and is ribbon bonded to the substrate on which the antenna is defined. The antenna is a microstrip array antenna with a simple etched pattern for producibility at high frequencies. Two antenna layouts are designed, for different coverage areas: a single array having 13.4-dBi directivity and a double array with 14.6-dBi directivity. Antenna losses are approximately 1-2 dB, giving antenna gains of about 12 and 13 dBi, respectively. Mechanical simplicity is achieved with this design, and unnecessary transitions are avoided. Measurements are performed on amplifier and antenna separately, as well as on the integrated design. Amplifier chips with and without benzocyclobutene passivation are fabricated and measured for comparison.

A switched beam antenna concept suitable for low-cost millimetre-wave applications is presented. The concept uses multiple travelling-wave patch arrays that together with the beam selection switches are realised on a single substrate, where the antenna and circuits are etched from the same metal layer. With its simple design and building practice, the concept provides good producibility at frequencies up to approximately 80 GHz. An experimental study is presented in which four-beam antennas for 24 GHz are built and measured.

High gain active microstrip antenna for 60 GHz WLAN

Abstract In this paper, a Decoupling Nearfield Surface (DNS) is designed above the antenna, to reduce the mutual coupling of closely two or more patch array. In this way, the electrical and magnetic distributions are utilized to demonstrate the mechanism of isolation. The proposed DNS element creates the electric field distributions with an orthogonal mode and the magnetic field distributions with excitation in substrate such that the effective suppression of antenna mutual coupling is obtained. The DNS element can be easily applied to the Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antennas that having multiple patch elements. Moreover, the proposed structure is implemented practically and simulated for a patched antenna. The measurement and simulation results verifies that the isolation is more than 20 dB and the isolated impedance bandwidth is about 7%.
