Nickel-Catalyzed Cross-Couplings Involving Carbon-Oxygen Bonds

Free-standing graphene paper with a grey metallic luster has been fabricated for the first time, by a convenient one-step method on a large scale. Herein, the assembly of graphene oxide dispersion into ordered paper occurs simultaneously with the chemical reduction of graphene oxide to graphene. The graphene paper presents the advantages of good flexibility, low weight (0.2 g cm−3) and high electrical conductivity (15 Ω sq−1). Moreover, the size and shape of the graphene paper are freely exchanged for those of the Teflon substrate used. The flexible graphene–PANI paper subsequently exhibits excellent supercapacitor performance with an enhanced specific capacitance (763 F g−1) and good cycling stability by electropolymerization of PANI nanorods on the above graphene paper. The method presented here shows great promise for the development of low-cost electrode materials in potential energy storage devices.

Electric field poled organic electro-optic materials: state of the art and future prospects.

The development of more efficient electrical storage is a pressing requirement to meet future societal and environmental needs. This demand for more sustainable, efficient energy storage has provoked a renewed scientific and commercial interest in advanced capacitor designs in which the suite of experimental techniques and ideas that comprise nanotechnology are playing a critical role. Capacitors can be charged and discharged quickly and are one of the primary building blocks of many types of electrical circuit, from microprocessors to large-sale power supplies, but usually have relatively low energy storage capability when compared with batteries. The application of nanostructured materials with bespoke morphologies and properties to electrochemical supercapacitors is being intensively studied in order to provide enhanced energy density without comprising their inherent high power density and excellent cyclability. In particular, electrode materials that exploit physical adsorption or redox reactions of electrolyte ions are foreseen to bridge the performance disparity between batteries with high energy density and capacitors with high power density. In this review, we present some of the novel nanomaterial systems applied for electrochemical supercapacitors and show how material morphology, chemistry and physical properties are being tailored to provide enhanced electrochemical supercapacitor performance.

Synthesis and characterization of polyaniline/activated carbon composites and preparation of conductive films

The focus of this study was to synthesize the inherently conductive polymer polyaniline using an optimized process to prepare polyaniline/silicon dioxide (PANI/SiO2) composites by in situ polymerization and ex situ solution mixing. PANI and PANI/SiO2 composite films were prepared by drop-by-drop and spin coating methods. The electrical conductivities of HCl doped PANI film and PANI/SiO2 composite films were measured according to the standard four-point-probe technique. The composite films exhibited an increase in electrical conductivity over neat PANI. PANI and PANI/SiO2 composites were also investigated by spectroscopic methods including UV-Vis, FT-IR, and Photoluminescence. UV-Vis and FT-IR studies showed that SiO2 particles affect the quinoid units along the polymer backbone and indicate strong interactions between the SiO2 particles and the quinoidal sites of PANI (doping effect). The photoluminescence properties of PANI and PANI/SiO2 composites were studied and the PANI/SiO2 composites showed increased intensity as compared to neat PANI. The increase of conductivity of PANI/SiO2 composite may be partially due to the doping or impurity effect of SiO2 where the silicon dioxides compete with chloride ions. The morphology of particles and films were examined by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). SEM measurements indicated that the SiO2 were well dispersed and isolated in composite films.
