Polymer thin films embedded with metal nanoparticles for electrochemical biosensors applications

Preparations of hybrid composites composed of two conducting components, a conducting polymer and silver, are reviewed. They are produced mainly by the oxidation of aniline or pyrrole with silver ions. In another approach, polyaniline or polypyrrole are used for the reduction of silver ions to metallic silver. Other synthetic approaches are also reviewed. Products of oxidation of aniline derivatives, including phenylenediamines, are considered. Morphology of both the conducting polymers and the silver in composites displays a rich variety. Conductivity of the composites seldom exceeds 1000 S cm−1 and seems to be controlled by percolation. Interfacial effects are also discussed. Potential applications of hybrid composites are outlined; they are likely to extend especially to conducting inks, printed electronics, noble-metal recovery, antimicrobial materials, catalysts, and sensors.

Conducting polymer-silver composites

Among various immobilizing materials, conductive polymer-based nanocomposites have been widely applied to fabricate the biosensors, because of their outstanding properties such as excellent electrocatalytic activity, high conductivity, and strong adsorptive ability compared to conventional conductive polymers. Electrochemical biosensors have played a significant role in delivering the diagnostic information and therapy monitoring in a rapid, simple, and low cost portable device. This paper reviews the recent developments in conductive polymer-based nanocomposites and their applications in electrochemical biosensors. The article starts with a general and concise comparison between the properties of conducting polymers and conducting polymer nanocomposites. Next, the current applications of conductive polymer-based nanocomposites of some important conducting polymers such as PANI, PPy, and PEDOT in enzymatic and nonenzymatic electrochemical biosensors are overviewed. This review article covers an 8-year period beginning in 2010.

Recent Progress in the Development of Conducting Polymer-Based Nanocomposites for Electrochemical Biosensors Applications: A Mini-Review

Silver nanoparticles decorated polyaniline nanocomposite based electrochemical sensor for the determination of anticancer drug 5-fluorouracil

A novel magnetic polyaniline (PANI)/Fe3O4/Ag nanocomposite was successfully synthesized via in situ polymerization induced by ultraviolet irradiation (λ = 254 nm) in the presence of Fe3O4 nanoparticles and Ag cations as oxidants. The morphology and structure of the newly prepared nanocomposite was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, vibrating sample magnetometry, transmission electron microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The corresponding saturation magnetization for the nanocomposite was about 20.37 emu g−1. The catalytic properties of the nanocomposite were evaluated in the synthesis of biologically and pharmaceutically important pyran derivatives and it was shown to produce high yields, short reaction times and an easy work-up process. The superparamagnetic properties of the nanocatalyst allowed easy separation from the reaction media.
