The main advances in the chemistry of acetylene in superbasic media achieved over the last five years are analyzed. Particular emphasis is placed on the ethynylation of aldehydes and ketones and C-, N- and O-vinylation. The cascade assembly of complex molecules in which ethynylation and vinylation are consecutive steps is considered. The bibliography includes 369 references.

6,8-Dioxabicyclo[3.2.1]octanes 1, prepared from methyl vinyl ketone dimer, have been readily converted into 2,6-disubstituted pyridine derivatives 2 in one step by treatment with AlCl3–NH2OH·HCl/AcOH. The transformation mechanism of this reaction has been studied by the preparation of a deuterium labelled 1,5-diketone, which was transformed into a pyridine via a dioxime, from the bicyclic ketal.

Direct synthesis of 2,6-disubstituted pyridines from bicyclic ketals

New method for one-pot preparation of cis 1,2-cyclopentanediols from bicyclic ketals in the 6,8-dioxabicyclo[3.2.1]octane series is described. Bicyclic ketals are refluxed for 1h with AlCl3 (3eq.) in AcOH and further refluxed for 60h after addition of Zn(8eq.) to give cis 1,2-cyclopentanediols in good yield.
