Changes in morphometric meander parameters identified on the Karoon River, Iran, using remote sensing data

The majority of tidal channels display marked meandering features. Despite their importance in oil-reservoir formation and tidal landscape morphology, questions remain on whether tidal-meander dynamics could be understood in terms of fluvial processes and theory. Key differences suggest otherwise, like the periodic reversal of landscape-forming tidal flows and the widely accepted empirical notion that tidal meanders are stable landscape features, in stark contrast with their migrating fluvial counterparts. On the contrary, here we show that, once properly normalized, observed migration rates of tidal and fluvial meanders are remarkably similar. Key to normalization is the role of tidal channel width that responds to the strong spatial gradients of landscape-forming flow rates and tidal prisms. We find that migration dynamics of tidal meanders agree with nonlinear theories for river meander evolution. Our results challenge the conventional view of tidal channels as stable landscape features and suggest that meandering tidal channels recapitulate many fluvial counterparts owing to large gradients of tidal prisms across meander wavelengths.

Field migration rates of tidal meanders recapitulate fluvial morphodynamics.

Lateral movement of river channel within its valley with time is a universal phenomenon. Various processes of fluvio-geomorphological environment such as rapid valley fill deposition due to very low channel gradient and resultant migration of active channel, bank failure and bankline migration, frequent occurrence of floods, capturing of lower courses of the tributaries by the trunk streams, and abandonment of tracks and avulsion are the most prominent factors behind channel dynamics in the sub-Himalayan part of West Bengal. Additionally, human interventions in the form of engineering constructions (bridges, flood embankments, etc.), tea plantation, mining and quarrying, and agricultural encroachment have emerged as another dominant issue which is pulverizing the ways of natural channel adjustment as well as also the channel behaviors. Both these processes are carrying significant messages of immense vulnerability for the study area known for its geomorphological instabilities. The dynamics of channel adjustment in terms of lateral migration can be lucidly illustrated through the application of modern tools of geoinformatics, i.e., the techniques of remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS) which is widely capable of detecting as well as representing the changes that took place over space and time. A meticulous endeavor has been made to assess the channel dynamics of the Diana River of this concerned region for an 85-year spanning period to unveil the nature of channel migration in terms of changes in historical bankline and centerline positions and alterations in meander geometries through numeric and graphical methods coupled with field observations to define the overall zone of channel migration for three subsequent reaches of the Diana River.

An assessment on the nature of channel migration of River Diana of the sub-Himalayan West Bengal using field and GIS techniques

In the present study, we investigate the effects of urbanization growth on river morphology in the downstream part of Talar River, east of Mazandaran Province, Iran. Morphological and morphometric parameters in 10 equal sub-reaches were defined along a 11.5 km reach of the Talar River after land cover maps were produced for 1955, 1968, 1994, 2005 and 2013. Land cover types changed extremely during the study period. Residential lands were found to have increased in area by about 1631%, while forest land and riparian vegetation decreased in by approximately 99.9 and 96.2%, respectively. The results of morphometric and morphological factors showed that average channel width (W) for all 11.5 km of the study river decreased by 84% during the study period, while the flow length increased by about 2.14%.

Effects of urbanization on river morphology of the Talar River, Mazandarn Province, Iran

Oxbow lakes, sloughs and other floodplain depressions associated with former channel positions are critical elements of floodplain hydrology, geomorphology and ecology. They comprise key elements of wetland and aquatic habitats and have important influence on the storage and routing of floodwaters. The hydrological connectivity between active river channels and floodplain depressions varies considerably in a qualitative sense, even within a single fluvial system. Several oxbows, sloughs and paleochannels were examined on the lower Sabine River, Texas/Louisiana, during a period of high but sub-bankfull flow as well as at lower flows. Six different types of surface water connectivity with the main, active channel were identified: (i) flow through—a portion of the river flow regularly passes through the feature and returns to the main channel; (ii) flood channel—there is no hydraulic connection at normal flows, but at high flows the channels convey discharge, at least part of which returns to the main channel; (iii) fill and spill—the features fill to a threshold level at high flows and then overflow (mainly via ephemeral channels) into flood basins; (iv) fill and drain—the features fill at high river discharges but do not (except in large floods) overflow because as river discharge declines, water drains back to the river; (v) tributary occupied—tributaries draining to the abandoned channel continue to occupy it, flowing through it to the active channel; and (vi) disconnected—no flow is exchanged except during large floods. The age or stage of infilling and the relative elevation of abandoned channels are important first-order controls of hydrological connectivity, but the lateral distance from the active channel is poorly related. Other critical controls are whether the cutoff section receives tributary input and whether a tie channel forms. The alluvial valley geomorphic context—specifically the presence of a meander belt ridge and flood basins—is also critical. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Hydrological connectivity of abandoned channel water bodies on a coastal plain river

This study focused on the prediction of a 22 km meandering channel migration of the Sabine River between the states of Texas and Louisiana. The meander characteristics of 12 bends, identified from seven orthophotos taken between 1974 and 2004, were acquired in a GIS environment. Based on that earlier years’ data acquisition, channel prediction was performed for the two years 1996 and 2004 using least squares estimation and linear extrapolations, yielding a satisfactory agreement with the observations (the median predicted and observed migration rates were 3.1 and 3.6 [m/year], respectively). The best-predicted migration rate was found to be associated with the longest orthophoto-recorded interval. The study confirmed that channel migration is strongly correlated with bend curvature and that the maximum migration rate of the bend corresponded to a radius of curvature [bend radius (RC)/channel width (WC)] of 2.5. In tight bends of a smaller radius of curvature than 1.6, secondary flow scouring near the bend apex increases bend curvature. The stability index of the dimensionless bend radius was determined to be 2.45. Overall, this study proves the effectiveness of least squares estimation with historical orthophotography for characterization of meandering channel migration.

Characterization and prediction of meandering channel migration in the GIS environment: A case study of the Sabine River in the USA

The study focused on the channel migration characterization and prediction of 22 km meander reach of Sabine River. Meander characteristics of 12 bends identified within the river section from 7 orthophotos taken between 1974 and 2004 were acquired by Data Logger tool. Based on the data acquisition of the former years, channel prediction was performed for two years 1996 and 2004 by using Channel Migration Predictor tool which gives a satisfactory agreement with observations (averages predicted and observed migration rates are 3.2 and 3.7 m/yr, respectively).
