Magnetorheological (MR) materials are classified as smart materials due to their responsiveness to external magnetic stimuli. Intensive research on MR materials has led to broad applications in several potential fields. A solid carrier matrix state called MR elastomer with its exceptional magnetic responsive feature is obtained by merging magnetizable particles within an elastomeric polymer. This integration results in outstanding characteristics on the rheological performances. Special prominence is given to the understanding of the base materials and fabrication as well as the functional behavior through various characterization methods. Broad applications of MREs are also explored to provide a profound market picture and to motivate researchers to develop novel technology. The functional behavior of MREs is briefly explained. The art of the materials provides the current position and mapping of the matrix and filler particles. Types of matrix and particles are mentioned together with the level of the research interest on MREs. Description of the fabrication is provided in simple diagrams as summarized from previous works to enhance the MREs performance. The possible tests to reveal the characteristics of the MREs are delivered with the global experimental setup. The review also explains the applications of MREs as well as discussion on the MREs future promising applications.

Recent Progress on Magnetorheological Solids: Materials, Fabrication, Testing, and Applications†

The numerical modelling of non-linear electroelasticity is presented in this work. Based on well-established basic equations of non-linear electroelasticity a variational formulation is built and the finite element method is employed to solve the non-linear electro-mechanical coupling problem. Numerical modelling of non-linear electroelasticity

A theory of mechanical behaviour of the magneto-sensitive elastomers is developed in the framework of a linear elasticity approach. Using a regular rectangular lattice model, different spatial distributions of magnetic particles within a polymer matrix are considered: isotropic, chain-like and plane-like. It is shown that interaction between the magnetic particles results in the contraction of an elastomer along the homogeneous magnetic field. With increasing magnetic field the shear modulus, G, for the shear deformation perpendicular to the magnetic field increases for all spatial distributions of magnetic particles. At the same time, with increasing magnetic field the Young's modulus, E, for tensile deformation along the magnetic field decreases for both chain-like and isotropic distributions of magnetic particles and increases for the plane-like distribution of magnetic particles.

Magneto-sensitive Elastomers in a Homogeneous Magnetic Field: A Regular Rectangular Lattice Model

In this paper the equations governing the deformations of infinitesimal (incremental) disturbances superimposed on finite static deformation fields involving magnetic and elastic interactions are presented. The coupling between the equations of mechanical equilibrium and Maxwell’s equations complicates the incremental formulation and particular attention is therefore paid to the derivation of the incremental equations, of the tensors of magnetoelastic moduli and of the incremental boundary conditions at a magnetoelastic/vacuum interface. The problem of surface stability for a solid half-space under plane strain with a magnetic field normal to its surface is used to illustrate the general results. The analysis involved leads to the simultaneous resolution of a bicubic and vanishing of a 7×7 determinant. In order to provide specific demonstration of the effect of the magnetic field, the material model is specialized to that of a “magnetoelastic Mooney–Rivlin solid”. Depending on the magnitudes of the magnetic field and the magnetoelastic coupling parameters, this shows that the half-space may become either more stable or less stable than in the absence of a magnetic field.
