Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have many unique physical, mechanical, and electronic properties. These distinct properties may be exploited such that they can be used for numerous applications ranging from sensors and actuators to composites. As a result, in a very short duration, CNTs appear to have drawn the attention of both the industry and the academia. However, there are certain challenges that need proper attention before the CNT-based devices can be realized on a large scale in the commercial market. In this paper, we report the use of CNTs for biomedical applications. The paper describes the distinct physical, electronic, and mechanical properties of nanotubes. The basics of synthesis and purification of CNTs are also reviewed. The challenges associated with CNTs, which remain to be fully addressed for their maximum utilization for biomedical applications, are discussed.

Carbon nanotubes for biomedical applications

Thermionic emission in heterostructures is proposed for integrated cooling of high power electronic and optoelectronic devices. This evaporative cooling is achieved by selective emission of hot electrons over a barrier layer from the cathode to the anode. It is shown that with available high electron mobility and low thermal conductivity materials, and with optimized conduction band offsets in heterostructures, single-stage room temperature cooling of up to 20°–40° over thicknesses of the order of microns is possible.

Field emission has been measured from a series of tetrahedrally bonded amorphous carbon (ta-C) films produced by the filtered cathodic vacuum arc. The threshold field and current densities achievable have been studied as a function of their sp3 content and of nitrogen incorporation. Typical undoped ta-C films are found to have a threshold field of 10–20 V/μm, decreasing with increasing sp3 content, and optimally nitrogen doped films exhibit threshold fields as low as 3–5 V/μm.

Field Emission in Vacuum Microelectronics

This article discusses the current status of the rapidly evolving area of field emitter arrays. The development of field emitter arrays is reviewed in the context of major applications of the devices, such as flat panel displays and cathodes for microwave power amplifiers. State-of-the art technologies for fabrication of field emitter arrays as well as recently reported results on electrical performance of the devices are reviewed. Remaining challenges in the major applications in conjunction with some of the potential pathways to device improvement are discussed.

Recent progress in field emitter array development for high performance applications

In this review/tutorial paper, we cover the history, physics, and current status of vacuum microelectronic devices. First we overview the performance requirements of vacuum microelectronic devices necessary for them to replace, or fill voids left by, solid state devices. Next we discuss the physical characteristics of micro-field-emission sources important to device applications. These characteristics include fundamental features, such as current-voltage data and noise, in addition to engineering considerations, such as life expectancy and procedures for tube assembly. We conclude with a review of a wide variety of demonstrated and proposed devices based on vacuum microelectronic principles, including electron guns, microwave tubes, and flat-panel displays. >
