Problem statement: While classical PID controllers are sensitive to variations in the system parameters, Fuzzy controllers do not need precise information about the system variables in order to be effective. However, PID controllers are better able to control and minimize the steady state error of the system. To enhance the controller performance, hybridization of these two controller structures comes to one mind immediately to exploit the beneficial sides of both categories. Approach: A hybrid fuzzy PID controller for the Electro-Hydraulic Position Servo System (EHPSS) was proposed in this study. The proposed control scheme was separated into two parts, fuzzy controller and PID controller. Fuzzy controller was used to control the piston when the piston locates far away from the target position. PID controller is applied when the piston is near the desired position. Results: We demonstrated the performance of control scheme via experiments performed on the EHPSS. Conclusion: The results from the experiments showed that the proposed hybrid fuzzy PID controller has superior performance compared to individual PID controller and fuzzy controller.

A Hybrid of Fuzzy and Proportional-Integral-Derivative Controller for Electro-Hydraulic Position Servo System

paper, DC motor speed control models were mathematically extracted and implemented using artificial intelligence techniques. Due to multivariable and non-linear in nature, it is difficult to achieve the optimum speed of the motor. Conventional PI controller gives the maximum overshoot problem. To overcome the maximum overshoot, artificial intelligence techniques have been incorporated in the controller architecture. Fuzzy logic controlled model of DC motor is implemented, investigated and further optimised by the genetic algorithm for the optimal fuzzy rule base. Digital signal processor TMS320LF2407A is also tested to control the speed of servo motor. The transient time, steady state response and the performance criteria IAE and ITAE of the above controllers have been investigated. The result shows that the fuzzy logic- GA integrated approach has minimum overshoot, and minimum transient and steady state parameters, which shows the more effectiveness and efficiency of FLC-GA hybridisation than FLC and conventional PI model to control the speed of the motor.

In this paper a novel Fuzzy-based proportional-integral derivative (PID) controller, which acts as an active queue manager (AQM) for Internet routers, is proposed. These controllers are used to reduce packet loss and improve network utilization in TCP/IP networks. The TCP/IP network is modeled as a time-delayed system with a saturated input. This is because of limitations of packet dropping probability and effects of propagation delays in TCP/IP networks. An improved Fuzzy algorithm is employed to derive optimal or near optimal PID control gains such that the error between the router queue length and the desired queue length is minimized. Basically, in this new methodology, the classical PID and fuzzy controller have been combined by a blending mechanism which depends on a certain function of actuating error. Simulation results show that for the same link utilization, the new hybrid fuzzy PID controller provides better performance than random early detection (RED) and PID controllers.

Fuzzy-based PID active queue manager for TCP/IP networks

In this study, a design methodology is introduced that blends the classical PID and the fuzzy controllers in an intelligent way and thus a new intelligent hybrid controller has been achieved. Basically, in this design methodology, the classical PID and fuzzy controller have been combined by a blending mechanism that depends on a certain function of actuating error. Moreover, an intelligent switching scheme is induced on the blending mechanism that makes a decision upon the priority of the two controller parts; namely, the classical PID and the fuzzy constituents. The simulations done on various processes using the new hybrid fuzzy PID controller provides ‘better’ system responses in terms of transient and steady-state performances when compared to the pure classical PID or the pure fuzzy controller applications. The controller parameters are all tuned by the aid of genetic search algorithm.
