Large deformation three-dimensional static analysis of deep water marine risers

This paper describes the way in which hydrostatic and hydrodynamic forces can be added to the conventional static and inertia forces for the non-linear analysis of 3D flexible pipes and riser systems. Non‐linear dynamic behaviour of flexible marine pipes and risers

The geometrically exact theory of linear elastic rods is used to formulate the general three-dimensional problem of a twisted, clamped rod hanging under gravity and subject to buoyancy forces from a fluid. The resulting boundary-value problem is solved by the method of matched asymptotic expansions. The truncated analytical solution is compared with results obtained from a numerical scheme and shows good agreement. The method is used to consider the near-catenary application of a clamped pipeline.

Matched asymptotic expansions for bent and twisted rods : applications for cable and pipeline laying

Many analysts use simple lower-order beam elements for the non-linear analysis of curved beam and arch structures. The aim of the present paper is to indicate how one may add the effects of buoyancy, steady-state current loading and riser top-tension to such an idealization so that it may be used for the analysis of offshore pipes and risers. The current work is restricted to static two-dimensional modelling but it paves the way for further work in three dimensions, which will include dynamics. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

Three-dimensional nonlinear statics of pipelaying using condensation in an incremental finite element algorithm

Several three-dimensional pipeline problems are used to illustrate a general pipeline and riser model with twist. A continuation technique is developed to solve convergence problems. Suitable stiff numerical methods are reviewed for general applications. 14 refs.
