Spread-spectrum communications, with its inherent interference attenuation capability, has over the years become an increasingly popular technique for use in many different systems. Applications range from antijam systems, to code division multiple access systems, to systems designed to combat multipath. It is the intention of this paper to provide a tutorial treatment of the theory of spread-spectrum communications, including a discussion on the applications referred to above, on the properties of common spreading sequences, and on techniques that can be used for acquisition and tracking.

Theory of Spread-Spectrum Communications--A Tutorial

In this paper, we introduce a mathematical framework for the characterization of network interference in wireless systems. We consider a network in which the interferers are scattered according to a spatial Poisson process and are operating asynchronously in a wireless environment subject to path loss, shadowing, and multipath fading. We start by determining the statistical distribution of the aggregate network interference. We then investigate four applications of the proposed model: 1) interference in cognitive radio networks; 2) interference in wireless packet networks; 3) spectrum of the aggregate radio-frequency emission of wireless networks; and 4) coexistence between ultrawideband and narrowband systems. Our framework accounts for all the essential physical parameters that affect network interference, such as the wireless propagation effects, the transmission technology, the spatial density of interferers, and the transmitted power of the interferers.

A Mathematical Theory of Network Interference and Its Applications

Spread spectrum communication techniques date back to the early fifties. Since the earliest applications, system improvements have been more evolutionary than revolutionary. Like most improvements in electronic systems, these are due primarily to the availability of ever higher speed integrated circuit components, which translate in this case to wider spread spectra. In three decades the achievable spreading factor has grown by about three orders of magnitude’ to the point that we are now limited more by bandwidth allocations than by technology limitations. Before we xamine the quantitative effects of spreading, let us catalog briefly the multiple purposes of spread spectrum communications. First, we note that spreading here refers to expansion of the bandwidth well beyond what is required to transmit digital data. Thus, a system transmitting data at a rate ( R ) of 100 Mbits/s using approximately 100 MHz of bandwidth (W) is not spread at all, while a system transmitting at 100 bits/s spread over a spectrum of about 100 MHz has a factor W/R = 106, or 60 dB of so-calledprocessing gain.

Spread spectrum communications: myths and realities

In this paper, error probability analyses are performed for a binary frequency-shift-keying (BFSK) system employing L hop/bit frequency-hopping (FH) spread-spectrum waveforms transmitted over a partial-band Gaussian noise jamming channel. The error probabilities for the L hop/bit BFSK/FH systems are obtained as the performance measure of the square-law linear combining soft decision receiver under the assumption of the worst-case partial-band jamming. The receiver in our analysis assumes no knowledge of jamming state (side information). Both exact and approximate (multiple bound-parameter Chernoff bound) solutions are obtained under two separate assumptions: with and without the system's thermal noise in the analyses. Numerical results of the error rates are graphically displayed as a function of signal-to-jamming power ratio with L and signal-to-noise ratio as parameters. All of our results, exact and approximate, indicated that the higher number of hops per bit produced higher error probabilities as a result of increased combining losses when the square-law linear combining soft decision receiver is employed in demodulating the multihop-per-bit waveform.

Probability of Error Analyses of a BFSK Frequency-Hopping System with Diversity Under Partial-Band Jamming Interference--Part II: Performance of Square-Law Nonlinear Combining Soft Decision Receivers

We present a mathematical model for communication subject to both network interference and noise. We introduce a framework where the interferers are scattered according to a spatial Poisson process, and are operating asynchronously in a wireless environment subject to path loss, shadowing, and multipath fading. We consider both cases of slow and fast-varying interferer positions. The paper is comprised of two separate parts. In Part I, we determine the distribution of the aggregate network interference at the output of a linear receiver. We characterize the error performance of the link, in terms of average and outage probabilities. The proposed model is valid for any linear modulation scheme (e.g., M-ary phase shift keying or M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation), and captures all the essential physical parameters that affect network interference. Our work generalizes the conventional analysis of communication in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise and fast fading, allowing such results to account for the effect of network interference. In Part II of the paper, we derive the capacity of the link when subject to network interference and noise, and characterize the spectrum of the aggregate interference.
