'Candidatus Phytoplasma', a taxon for the wall-less, non-helical prokaryotes that colonize plant phloem and insects
Giuseppe Firrao,M. Andersen,Assunta Bertaccini,E. Boudon,Joseph M. Bové,X. Daire,Robert E. Davis,J. Fletcher,Monique Garnier,Karen S. Gibb,Dawn E. Gundersen-Rindal,Nigel A. Harrison,Chuji Hiruki,B. C. Kirpatrick,Phil Jones,C. R. Kuske,I.-M. Lee,Lia W. Liefting,Carmine Marcone,Shigetou Namba,Bernd Schneider,Barbara B. Sears,E. Seemuller,Christine D. Smart,Claire Streten,K. Wang +25 more
TL;DR: The trivial name 'phytoplasma' has been adopted to collectively name wall-less, non-helical prokaryotes that colonize plant phloem and insects, which were formerly known as mycoplasma-like organisms.
Journal ArticleDOI
‘Candidatus Phytoplasma asteris’, a novel phytoplasma taxon associated with aster yellows and related diseases
I.-M. Lee,Dawn E. Gundersen-Rindal,Robert E. Davis,K. D. Bottner,Carmine Marcone,E. Seemuller +5 more
TL;DR: Aster yellows (AY) group (16SrI) phytoplasmas are associated with over 100 economically important diseases worldwide and represent the most diverse and widespread phy toplasmas group.
Journal ArticleDOI
Association of 'Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum' with Zebra Chip Disease of Potato Established by Graft and Psyllid Transmission, Electron Microscopy, and PCR.
Gary A. Secor,Viviana V. Rivera,J. A. Abad,I.-M. Lee,G. R. G. Clover,L. W. Liefting,X. Li,S. H. De Boer +7 more
TL;DR: Transmission electron microscopic observation of ZC-affected tissues revealed the presence of bacteria-like organisms (BLOs) in the phloem of potato and tomato plants inoculated by grafting and psyllid feeding, which confirms the association of 'Ca. L. solanacearum' with potatoes affected by ZC in the United States, Mexico, and Guatemala.
Journal ArticleDOI
Phylogenetic analysis and delineation of phytoplasmas based on secY gene sequences.
TL;DR: The secY gene sequence is more useful genetic marker than the 16S rRNA gene for finer differentiation of closely related phytoplasma strains based on RFLP analysis with selected restriction enzymes and this study revealed two heterogeneous spc operons present in the phy toplasma clade.
Journal ArticleDOI
'Candidatus Phytoplasma costaricanum' a novel phytoplasma associated with an emerging disease in soybean (Glycine max).
TL;DR: A novel phytoplasma associated with a newly emerging disease in soybean, known as soybean stunt (SoyST), was found in 2002 in a soybean plantation in Alajuela Province, Costa Rica and represents a novel taxon, for which the name 'Candidatus Phy toplasma costaricanum' is proposed.
