In this paper, the principles underlying the operation of desiccant cooling systems are recalled and their actual technological applications are discussed. Through a literature review, the feasibility of the desiccant cooling in different climates is proven and the advantages it can offer in terms energy and cost savings are underscored. Some commented examples are presented to illustrate how the desiccant cooling can be a perfective supplement to other cooling systems such as traditional vapour compression air conditioning system, the evaporative cooling, and the chilled-ceiling radiant cooling. It is notably shown that the desiccant materials, when associated with evaporative cooling or chilled-ceiling radiant cooling, can render them applicable under a diversity of climatic conditions.

Rotary desiccant air conditioning system, which combines the technologies of desiccant dehumidification and evaporative cooling, is advantageous in being free from CFCs, using low grade thermal energy and controlling humidity and temperature separately. Compared with conventional vapor compression air conditioning system, it preserves the merits of environment-friendly, energy saving, healthy, comfortable, etc. Ongoing research and development works suggest that new desiccant materials and novel system configurations have significant potential for improving the performance and reliability and reducing the cost and size of rotary desiccant dehumidification and air conditioning system, thereby increasing its market competitiveness and breaking out the current fairly small niche market. For the purpose of providing an overview of recent efforts on these issues and showing how rotary desiccant air conditioning systems can be designed and coupled to available thermal energy, this paper presents and analyzes the status of rotary desiccant dehumidification and air conditioning in the following three aspects: the development of advanced desiccant materials, the optimization of system configuration and the utilization of solar energy and other low grade heat sources, such as solar energy, district heating, waste heat and bioenergy. Some key problems to further push forward the research and development of this technology are also summarized.

The use of heat produced by solar thermal collectors is an interesting option for thermal driven air conditioning processes A thermal driven cooling technique which fits well to non-tracking solar collectors is the desiccant cooling technique Recently several projects have been carried out which focus on the connection of desiccant cooling systems with solar thermal energy for regeneration of the sorbents This communication deals with three main topics: (1) experiences achieved in a realized system which is coupled to a solar collector are discussed, (2) a new concept is presented, in which a solar air collector is integrated into the desiccant cooling cycle as the only heat source and (3) a comparative study is presented which compares system performance for different system configurations and different climatic situations
