To deal with the dynamic and imbalanced traffic requirements in Low Earth Orbit satellite networks, several distributed load balancing routing schemes have been proposed. However, because of the lack of global view, these schemes may lead to cascading congestion in regions with high volume of traffic. To solve this problem, a Hybrid-Traffic-Detour based Load Balancing Routing (HLBR) scheme is proposed, where a Long-Distance Traffic Detour (LTD) method is devised and coordinates with distributed traffic detour method to perform self-adaptive load balancing. The forwarding path of LTD is acquired by the Circuitous Multipath Calculation (CMC) based on prior geographical information, and activated by the LTD-Shift-Trigger (LST) through real-time congestion perception. Simulation results show that the HLBR can mitigate cascading congestion and achieve efficient traffic distribution.

Hybrid-Traffic-Detour based load balancing for onboard routing in LEO satellite networks

Smart manufacturing is a vision and major driver for change in today’s industry. The goal of smart manufacturing is to optimize manufacturing processes through constantly monitoring, controlling, and adapting processes towards more efficient and personalised manufacturing. This requires and relies on technologies for connected machines incorporating a variety of computation, sensing, actuation, and machine to machine communications modalities. As such, understanding the change towards smart manufacturing requires knowledge of the enabling technologies, their applications in real world scenarios and the communication protocols and their performance to meet application requirements. Particularly, wireless communication is becoming an integral part of modern smart manufacturing and is expected to play an important role in achieving the goals of smart manufacturing. This paper presents an extensive review of wireless communication protocols currently applied in manufacturing environments and provides a comprehensive review of the associated use cases whilst defining their expected impact on the future of smart manufacturing. Based on the review, we point out a number of open challenges and directions for future research in wireless communication technologies for smart manufacturing.

A Wireless Internet-access Mesh NETwork (WIMNET) provides scalable and reliable internet access through the deployment of multiple access points (APs) and gateways (GWs). In this work, we propose a selective routing algorithm aiming at a hierarchical minimization of the operational cost and the maximal end-to-end delay. In particular, by deploying redundant APs/GWs in the network field, the WIMNET becomes robust to the link or AP/GW failure. However, these redundant APs/GWs increase the operational cost like the power consumption. By using Dijkstra algorithm and 2-opt algorithm, the proposed algorithm iteratively deactivates the deployed APs/GWs and performs the routing that reduces the maximal end-to-end delay based on the APs/GWs remaining active. The generated route meets the real-world constraints like fairness criterion. We further propose a cross-layer design to enhance the routing performance by exploiting the MAC-layer frame aggregation technique. The selective routing algorithm is then implemented in the WIMNET simulator proposed by our group. The numerical experiments demonstrate that in both indoor and open space environments, the proposed selective routing greatly reduces the operational cost, i.e., up to $$80\%$$
