An eye tracker having a waveguide for propagating illumination light towards an eye and propagating image light reflected from at least one surface of an eye, a light source optically coupled to the waveguide, and a detector optically coupled to the waveguide. Disposed in the waveguide is at least one grating lamina for deflecting the illumination light towards the eye along a first waveguide path and deflecting the image light towards the detector along a second waveguide path.

Apparatus for eye tracking

There is provided a transparent wearable data display comprising: a source of collimated light; a means for deflecting said collimated light into a scanned beam; a first array comprising one column and integer N TOWS of switchable grating elements sandwiched between first and second parallel transparent substrates, the substrates together functioning as a first light guide; an second array comprising M columns and N rows of switchable grating elements sandwiched between third and fourth, parallel transparent substrates the substrates together functioning as a second light guide; transparent electrodes applied to opposing faces of the first and second and the third and fourth substrates. Hie apparatus further comprises a first coupling means tor directing the scanned beam into a first TIR light path between the outer surfaces of the first lightguide along the first array column; and a second coupling means for directing the first HR light into a second TIR path between the outer surfaces of the second lightguide along a row of elements of the second array.

Wearable data display

An eye tracker having a first waveguide for propagating illumination light along a first waveguide path and propagating image light reflected from at least one surface of an eye along a second waveguide path. At least one grating lamina for deflecting the illumination light out of the first waveguide path towards the eye and deflecting the image light into the second waveguide path towards a detector is disposed adjacent an optical surface of the waveguide.

Holographic waveguide eye tracker

There is provided a contact image sensor comprising: an illumination; a first SBG array device; a transmission grating; a second SBG array device; a waveguiding layer comprising a multiplicity of waveguide cores separated by cladding material; an upper clad layer; and a platen The sensor further comprises: means for coupling light from said illumination means into the first SBG array; means for coupling light out of the cores into output optical paths coupled to a detector comprising at least one photosensitive element.

Contact image sensor using switchable bragg gratings

An object tracker comprises: a source of light; at least one illumination waveguide optically coupled to said source containing at least one grating lamina for diffracting said light towards an external object; at least one detector waveguide containing a grating lamina for in-coupling and deflecting a first polarization of light reflected from said object into a first waveguide direction and deflecting a second polarization of light reflected from said object into a second waveguide direction; at least one detector optically coupled to said detector waveguide operative to receive light propagating in said first waveguide direction; and at least one detector optically coupled to said detector waveguide operative to receive light propagating in said second waveguide direction, wherein said first and second waveguide directions correspond to first and second directions of relative object motion. The optical tracker may be implemented in an eye tracker.

Holographic Waveguide Optical Tracker

Grating configurations are described for creating time sequenced field of view (FOV) tiles for a waveguide display. Pairings of non-output diffraction gratings and output diffraction gratings are activated to create a number of FOV tiles in a time sequence, for example in a frame update period for the image. Examples of a non-output grating are an input grating and a fold grating. For a set of at least three gratings used to make the pairings, each non-output grating is paired with each output grating. The number of pairings, and so the number of FOV tiles, is equal to a product of the total number of non-output gratings and the total number of output gratings. At least one diffraction grating in the pairing is an active pairing. Also described is a multiplexed diffraction grating including multiplexed K-vectors which increases the overall angular bandwidth for both incidence and diffraction.
