A culture of speed: the dilemma of being modern in 1930s Australia

An international conference to increase people’s awareness of the contributions that watershed management can make to future land stewardship was held in Tucson, Arizona, March 13-16, 2000. This bibliography is a compilation of the synthesis and poster papers presented at the conference along with the literature cited in these papers on watershed research projects, applied watershed management activities, and technology transfer mechanisms. This publication furnishes a literature basis for researchers, managers, decision-makers, educators, students, and lay persons with a keen interest in watershed management and better land stewardship in the future. Watershed Management Contributions to Land Stewardship: A Literature Review

The story of liberal democracy over the last half century has been a triumphant one in many ways, with the number of democracies increasing from a minority of states to a significant majority. Yet substantial problems afflict democratic states, and while the number of democratic countries has expanded, democratic practice has contracted. This book introduces a novel framework for evaluating the rise and decline of democratic governance. Examining three mature democratic countries – Britain, Australia and New Zealand – the authors discuss patterns of governance from the emergence of mass democracy at the outset of the twentieth century through to its present condition. The shared political cultures and institutional arrangements of the three countries allow the authors to investigate comparatively the dynamics of political evolution and the possibilities for systemic developments and institutional change.

Democratic Decline and Democratic Renewal: Political Change in Britain, Australia and New Zealand

JM Keynes was more important to Australia than Australia was to him. Yet the connections are many and varied, and worthy of some attention. As has been said, ‘a survey of the rise and fall of Keynesian economics in Australia’ is ‘an important story which still has to be written’; but it ‘is the subject for at least three years arduous research’ (Groenewegen 1983). This paper is less ambitious. An exercise in economic, personal and political history and in the history of economic thought, it briefly outlines: 1. Keynes’s dealings with the Australian Prime Minister, William Morris Hughes, over the reparations demands against Germany after World War I; 2. some incidental economic issues; 3. Keynes’s opinions and influence on the handling of the Depression in Australia; 4. the early impact of Keynesian economics in Australia; and 5. Australia’s approach to the creation of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, of which Keynes was co-founder.
