Quasi-static analysis of a face gear under torque

Face gear drives have many advantages over other cross axis transmissions especially in high performance applications. The lack of published design experience and design standards make their design difficult. This is mainly due to the complex geometries and to the lack of practical experience. For these reasons face gears have not been used for long. This work is aimed at investigating the behavior of a face gear transmission considering contact path under load, load sharing and stresses, for an unmodified gear set including shaft misalignment and modification on pinion profile. The investigation is carried out by integrating a 3D CAD system and a FEA code, and by simulating the meshing of pinion and gear sectors with three teeth, using contact elements and an automated contact algorithm. The procedures followed to create the 3D models of teeth in mesh are described and finite element analysis results discussed showing the differences between unmodified, modified and misaligned teeth. Results show the influence of load on theoretically calculated contact paths, contact areas, contact length and load sharing. The differences with respect to the ideal case are sometimes remarkable. Further developments are discussed.© 2003 ASME

Low-frequency lattice vibrational modes have been discussed to play a crucial role in the phase transformation process of flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Therefore, Raman spectroscopy was applied to study the lattice dynamics of a pillared layer DUT-8(Ni) framework (DUT - Dresden University of Technology), existing in rigid and flexible forms. Both the open and the close pore phases could be unambiguously identified by breathing mode bands at 23 cm-1 and 60 cm-1 in the corresponding Raman spectra, showing the efficiency of the technique for monitoring the flexibility of MOF materials as well as the differences in the lattice vibrations of the two phases. Born-Oppenheimer Molecular Dynamics simulations showed that observed low-frequency bands indeed correspond to the oscillation of the breathing mode along the diagonals of the pore channels. Moreover, the directional character of low-frequency vibrations in the flexible version of DUT-8(Ni) could be visualized by the orientation dependent Raman spectroscopy experiment.

Gear skiving has received considerable attention because of its high productivity, particularly in internal gear cutting, and skiving cutter design methods have been widely investigated. At the beginning of a cutter design process, a shaft angle, a center distance, and the number of teeth are examined as basic parameters for cutting gears. In current gear skiving, a shaft angle is generally set to be approximately 20°; however, the reason for selecting this value has not been clarified. In the present study, the validity of the value of shaft angle is discussed by calculating the cutting tool parameters, such as instantaneous rake angles, clearance angles, cut depths, and cutting speeds at continuously moving cutting points against various shaft angles. Therefore, the widely used value of shaft angle would result in moderate cutting tool parameters. In addition, the cutting force and cutter wear would be low when a cutter axis inclines opposite to the gear helix to be cut.

Effects of shaft angle on cutting tool parameters in internal gear skiving

A computer simulation program for gear shaving is developed. For this purpose, a simple model for a cutting mechanism in gear shaving is proposed. In this model, a cutting action of a shaving cutter is considered as a penetration of lands of the cutter tooth. In order to calculate shaving stock on the basis of the model, the empirical equation which represents a relationship between the depth of the land penetration and the distributed load on the tooth flank is obtained by carrying out indentation tests of a block by a roller with serrations. In the computer simulation program based on the model, a theoretical calculation method of load distribution on tooth flanks of a skew gear is applied. The reliability of this simulation program is confirmed by a good qualitative agreement of the calculated tooth forms after gear shaving with the measured ones.
