A flux-cored wire for different-material bonding which, when used for bonding an aluminum-based material to an iron-based material, heightens the bonding strength and has satisfactory welding efficiency; a method of bonding different materials; and a joint obtained by the method. In particular, the method is for use in the fusion welding of a high-tension steel material to a 6000-series aluminum alloy material, which are high-strength different materials, and in the bonding of a zinc-plated steel material. One embodiment employs a flux-cored wire comprising an aluminum sheath and a flux with which the inside of the sheath is filled, wherein the flux is a fluoride composition containing a specific amount of AlF3 and containing no chloride and the sheath comprises an aluminum alloy containing 1-13 mass% silicon. Use of such flux-cored wire in the fusion welding of a high-tension steel material to a 6000-series aluminum alloy material, which are high-strength different materials, gives a high bonding strength.

An electrode for an ignition device is made from a Ni-based nickel-chromium- iron alloy which has improved resistance to high temperature oxidation, sulfldation, corrosive wear, deformation and fracture includes, by weight of the alloy: 14.5-25% chromium; 7-22% iron; 0.2-0.5% manganese; 0.2-0.5% silicon; 0.1-2.5% aluminum; 0.05-0.15% titanium; 0.01-0.1% total of calcium and magnesium; 0.005-0.5% zirconium; 0.001-0.01% boron, and the balance substantially Ni. It may also include at least one rare earth element selected from the group consisting of: yttrium, hafnium, lanthanum, cerium and neodymium in amounts ranging from 0.01-0.15% by weight, and incidental impurities, including cobalt, niobium, molybdenum, copper, carbon, lead, phosphorus or sulfur. These total of these impurities will typically be controlled to limits of 0.1% cobalt, 0.05% niobium, 0.05% molybdenum, 0.01% copper, 0.01% carbon. 0.005% lead, 0.005% phosphorus and 0.005% sulfur. The ignition device may be a spark plug which includes a ceramic insulator, a conductive shell, a center electrode disposed in the ceramic insulator having a terminal end and a sparking end with a center electrode sparking surface, and a ground electrode operatively attached to said shell having a ground electrode sparking surface, the center electrode sparking surface and the ground electrode sparking surface defining a spark gap therebetween. At least one of the center electrode or the ground electrode includes the solution- strengthened Ni-based nickel-chromium-iron alloy. The Ni-based nickel-chromium- iron alloy electrodes of the invention may also include a core with thermal conductivity greater than that of the Ni-based nickel-chromium-iron alloy, such as copper or silver or their alloys.

Electrode for an Ignition Device

A method of arc welding with a cored electrode comprising creating a positive waveform with a first shape and having a first time; creating a negative waveform with a second shape and having a second time; making one of the first and second shapes greater in magnitude than the other of the shapes; and, adjusting the percentage relationship of the first and second times so the time of the shape with the greater magnitude is substantially less than the time of the other shape.

Method of AC welding with cored electrode

A welding system is disclosed for performing a short arc welding process between an advancing wire electrode and a workpiece. The system comprises a power source with a controller for creating a current pulse introducing energy into the electrode to melt the end of the electrode and a low current quiescent metal transfer section following the end of the melting pulse during which the melted electrode short circuits against the workpiece; a timer to measure the actual time between the end of the pulse and the short circuit; a device for setting a desired time from the pulse to the short circuit; a circuit to create a corrective signal based upon the difference between the actual time and the desired time; and, a circuit responsive to the corrective signal to control a given parameter of the current pulse. Also disclosed is a strategy for arc welding utilizing a cored electrode that produces welds with low levels of contaminants and which are strong, tough, and durable. The arc welding process generally utilizes an AC waveform. The cored electrode can be a self-shielded flux cored electrode (FCAW-S). Various electrode compositions are described that are particularly beneficial when used in conjunction with an AC waveform.

Synergistic welding system

The invention is concerned with a welding flux composition comprising a first alloy including iron, at least two metals reactive with oxygen under welding conditions and selected from the group consisting of aluminum, titanium, zirconium and boron and a weld improving metal selected from the group consisting of magnesium and manganese, said first alloy comprising from about 1 percent to about 4.5 percent by weight of the flux composition. The invention is also concerned with a weld forming composition comprising a metal tube having therewithin a welding flux as set out above. The invention is further concerned with a process for reducing particulate matter produced during the welding operation, comprising a welding flux used in said operation including from about 1 percent to about 4.5 percent by weight of the above first alloy.
