Pervasive growth of Internet of Things (IoT) is visible across the globe. The 2016 Dyn cyberattack exposed the critical fault-lines among smart networks. Security of IoT has become a critical concern. The danger exposed by infested Internet-connected Things not only affects the security of IoT but also threatens the complete Internet eco-system which can possibly exploit the vulnerable Things (smart devices) deployed as botnets. Mirai malware compromised the video surveillance devices and paralyzed Internet via distributed denial of service attacks. In the recent past, security attack vectors have evolved bothways, in terms of complexity and diversity. Hence, to identify and prevent or detect novel attacks, it is important to analyze techniques in IoT context. This survey classifies the IoT security threats and challenges for IoT networks by evaluating existing defense techniques. Our main focus is on network intrusion detection systems (NIDSs); hence, this paper reviews existing NIDS implementation tools and datasets as well as free and open-source network sniffing software. Then, it surveys, analyzes, and compares state-of-the-art NIDS proposals in the IoT context in terms of architecture, detection methodologies, validation strategies, treated threats, and algorithm deployments. The review deals with both traditional and machine learning (ML) NIDS techniques and discusses future directions. In this survey, our focus is on IoT NIDS deployed via ML since learning algorithms have a good success rate in security and privacy. The survey provides a comprehensive review of NIDSs deploying different aspects of learning techniques for IoT, unlike other top surveys targeting the traditional systems. We believe that, this paper will be useful for academia and industry research, first, to identify IoT threats and challenges, second, to implement their own NIDS and finally to propose new smart techniques in IoT context considering IoT limitations. Moreover, the survey will enable security individuals differentiate IoT NIDS from traditional ones.

Network Intrusion Detection for IoT Security Based on Learning Techniques

The vision of the Internet of Things (IoT) is to enable systems across the globe to share data using advanced communication technologies. With the recent technological advancements, IoT-based solutions are no longer a challenging vision. IoT will offer numerous and potentially revolutionary benefits to today’s digital world. Future personalized and connected healthcare is one of the promising areas to see the benefits of IoT. This paper surveys emerging healthcare applications, including detailed technical aspects required for the realization of a complete end-to-end solution for each application. The survey explores the key application-specific requirements from the perspective of communication technologies. Furthermore, a detailed exploration from the existing to the emerging technologies and standards that would enable such applications is presented, highlighting the critical consideration of short-range and long-range communications. Finally, the survey highlights important open research challenges and issues specifically related to IoT-based future healthcare systems.

A Survey on the Roles of Communication Technologies in IoT-Based Personalized Healthcare Applications

The Internet of Things (IoT) is an ecosystem that integrates physical objects, software and hardware to interact with each other. Aging of population, shortage of healthcare resources, and rising medical costs make IoT-based technologies necessary to be tailored to address these challenges in healthcare. This systematic literature review has been conducted to determine the main application area of IoT in healthcare, components of IoT architecture in healthcare, most important technologies in IoT, characteristics of cloud-based architecture, security and interoperability issues in IoT architecture and effects, and challenges of IoT in healthcare. Sixty relevant papers, published between 2000 and 2016, were reviewed and analyzed. This analysis revealed that home healthcare service was one of the main application areas of IoT in healthcare. Cloud-based architecture, by providing great flexibility and scalability, has been deployed in most of the reviewed studies. Communication technologies including wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi), Bluetooth, radio-frequency identification (RFID), ZigBee, and Low-Power Wireless Personal Area Networks (LoWPAN) were frequently used in different IoT models. The studies regarding the security and interoperability issues in IoT architecture in health are still low in number. With respect to the most important effects of IoT in healthcare, these included ability of information exchange, decreasing stay of hospitalization and healthcare costs. The main challenges of IoT in healthcare were security and privacy issues.

The application of internet of things in healthcare: a systematic literature review and classification

Nowadays research is heading towards the integration of cloud computing and Internet of Things thus creating a Cloud of Things (CoT). This combination generates a new paradigm for pervasive and ubiquitous computing. However, reliable CoT-based services, particularly, highly delay-sensitive services, such as, healthcare, require energy-efficient CoT architectures. Considerable efforts have been proposed to improve the efficiency of CoT architectures. This paper analyses CoT architectures and platforms, as well as the implementation of CoT in the context of smart healthcare. Subsequently, the paper explains some related issues of CoT, including the lack of standardization. Moreover, it focuses on energy efficiency with an in depth analysis of the most relevant proposals available in the literature. An evaluation of all the energy efficiency solutions investigated in this paper shows there is still a need to improve energy efficiency, especially regarding QoS and performance.

Enabling Technologies on Cloud of Things for Smart Healthcare

The technology of Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud has exposed devices to vulnerabilities. As they are distributed, the different devices communicate real time information to open, private or hybrid clouds, with the possibility of collecting, storing and analyzing big data streams in new forms. In the healthcare context, the increased deployment of IoT devices makes patient information a subject to malicious attacks depending on the security and privacy of the IoT devices. While a number of researchers have explored such security challenges and open problems in IoT, there is an unfortunate lack of a systematic study of the security challenges in the IoT for eHealth on clouds. In this paper, we aim at bridging this gap by conducting a thorough analysis of IoT security Vulnerability. We present then security challenges in the cloud for eHealth domain and recent proposed solutions. We also provide a proposition of an IoT system in the cloud.
