The effect of substrate temperature on the structural and some physical properties of ultrasonically sprayed CdS films

Solution growth technique for deposition of nickel oxide thin films

Black and white images were projected onto n-type silicon (100) wafers during a photoelectrochemical etch to produce a color image that photoluminesces. The photoluminescence originates from a thin layer of luminescent porous silicon that is produced in the photoetch, and the colors that appear in the etched image arise from thin-film optical interference. A diffraction grating was also photoetched into the substrate, demonstrating simultaneous encoding of a gray-scale image into thin-film interference, luminescence, and diffraction phenomena.

Thin film device applications

The present chapter is devoted to applications based on the properties of magnetic thin films. The material of this chapter has been organized into two main sections. In the first section, the reader is introduced to the subject of magnetism in thin films. The discussions in this section are limited to the extent they are relevant to device fabrication. For further details on magnetism in thin films, references(1–5) are given at the end of the chapter. The second section describes various devices.

Magnetic Thin Film Devices

In order to appreciate thin film device applications, it is essential to understand what thin films are, what makes them so attractive for applications, and how they are prepared and characterized. A brief review of the salient and relevant features of the topics is presented in the following sections of this chapter. For more details, the reader is referred to a host of reviews(1–6) and books(7–12) on the subject written from different view-points.

Thin Film Technology: An Introduction

Before we go into the description of various optical coatings, we would like to familiarize the reader with the basic optics of thin films that is necessary for the understanding and design of these coatings.

Thin Films in Optics

The discovery of superconductivity by Kammerlingh Onnes(1) in 1911 and of the associated effects by others in subsequent years has given birth to a new branch of engineering called quantum engineering. Studies of superconductivity in thin films have made remarkable contributions to the development of the physics of this phenomenon, which is now well established as a macroscopic manifestation of quantum effects. One of the most fascinating phenomena revealed by thin film studies is that of superconductive tunneling, which alone has led to the emergence of a completely new technology of superconducting electronics. Superconducting integrated circuits make the most accurate electronic devices. This chapter discusses the whole variety of thin film superconducting devices. It is not our aim here to discuss the physics of superconductivity, exhaustive details of which can be found(2–6) in standard textbooks and reviews available at all levels. Nevertheless, to maintain the continuity of ideas, before going over to the discussion of devices we would like to give a brief account of some of the fundamental concepts of superconductivity which are pertinent to devices.
