Traditional and novel walkable built environment metrics and social capital

Entrepreneurship has been recognized as a key contributor to the economic development of countries and societal wellbeing. Building and sustaining an adequate entrepreneurial climate challenges—to a high extent—transitional economies world-wide, pushing these countries to develop policies and strategies aimed to sustain high-quality national entrepreneurship. The paper seeks to understand the key determinants of a country’s entrepreneurial environment that drive potential entrepreneurs to assume an entrepreneurial status. It attempts to examine the countries’ entrepreneurial environment factors that influence the development of entrepreneurial spirit and affect the potential entrepreneurs’ decision to start a new venture as a desirable career opportunity. Entrepreneurial spirit is measured by entrepreneurial desirability, feasibility and social stability, taken from the Amway Global Entrepreneurship Report (AGER) 2018 data on national entrepreneurship. The results of the linear regression employed in the paper suggest that, in transitional economies like Romania, clear and stable rules and regulations, manageable taxes, an overall beneficial economic situation, as well as availability and accessibility of technology, may lead to greater entrepreneurial drive and ambition, which is fundamental to sustaining economic growth. The article ends with a discussion about the results and implications of the research.

Understanding personality development of entrepreneurs is important in current entrepreneurial research. Previous studies have mentioned some perspectives towards a scientific understanding of entrepreneurship, through identification and in-depth examination of personality characteristics. These studies show that individual's function as a totality of personal characteristics (which involve biological, psychological, and cultural levels related to personal narratives) is needed. Some experts point out that success can be explained in the dynamics of the daily journey of the business persons than in trying to explain them into personality categories.

The growth of entrepreneurial personality can be understood in accordance with the identity of the community and local culture. The wholeness of a person being an entrepreneur is a process of forming and revealing the development of an entrepreneurial personality. Personality growth will be revealed along the journey of life, following the same pattern in a narrative life story that is influenced by socio-cultural aspects. These patterns can be expressed in archetype. Entrepreneurs also share a set of cultural and social values, some of which are based on the values held by the community. However, research on entrepreneurial personality as a whole in the context of Indonesian culture, is still needed

This study aims to look at entrepreneurship as the dynamic’s perspective of the personality narrative life stories and archetype of the cultural context in Indonesia. In addition, this study seeks non-economic factors, such as entrepreneurial personality and culture, affect the dynamics of the performance of a startup business.

Through the study of archetype theory and narrative life story, it can be proposed a measuring tool that can explain the concept of entrepreneurial archetype personality in the Indonesian context. This archetype personality measurement tool uses a life story perspective that sees the dynamics of entrepreneurial journey as an archetype hero journey

Is there social capital in cities? The association of urban form and social capital formation in the metropolitan cities of Indonesia

New endogenous growth theory introduces how investment in knowledge and human capital contribute to economic growth through spillover of knowledge. However, the theory has limitation because it does not explain the cause and the mechanism of how knowledge spillover occurs. Accordingly, by employing panel data of 33 provinces in Indonesia over the period of 2008–2013 and fixed effect method, this paper aims to investigate the roles of entrepreneurship on regional economic growth in Indonesia. The study applies different approaches to measure the entrepreneurial activities based on GEM categories, namely, self-employment rate and business ownership rate as indicators of entrepreneurial productivity. Furthermore, a more specific analysis is conducted by identifying entrepreneurial activities into formal sector and informal sector. The estimation result indicates that entrepreneurial productivity plays a significant role on regional economic growth in Indonesia. Moreover, entrepreneurial activities in different sectors give different contributions on the economic growth.

Population density and energy consumption: A study in Indonesian provinces

Children are important asset for a country’s future and development. Their health and well-being matter in determining their productivity in the future. However, obesity rates amongst children in Indonesia is on the rise. Ministry of Health in Indonesia reported the highest national prevalence of obesity occurred in children aged 5-12 years (18.8%), followed by groups 13-15 years (10.8 %), and 16-18 years (7.3%). Obesity itself is caused by increased intake of sugar and fat that are mostly found in prepared food and junk food as well as low physical activity. Accordingly, prepared food consumption is on the rise as well due to the modern fast-paced lives these days. Using data from Indonesian Family Life Survey wave 5, this paper aims to find association between family’s characteristics and children’s health status. The result shows economic class have no significant effect on children’s health status. On the other hand, mother’s years of schooling, mother’s health, fast food consumption and father’s smoking behaviour have a significant association on children’s health. The outcome of mother’s well-being give positive effect on children’s health since they are traditionally the caregiver of the family, hence with better well-being, they are able to create better environment for the children.

Mother’s well-being to the rescue of future generation’s health

ABSTRACT Discussions on the relationship between urban form and social capital have garnered attention for a long time as they are well documented in the literature. However, the empirical analysis regarding these two issues is still limited. This study proposes a new perspective on the link between the 3Ds (Density, Diversity, and Design) element of urban form and social capital in the global south using the Indonesian context. Using the linear multilevel regression, this study consistently revealed a contradicting result according to which greater residential density is negatively associated with several social capital factors. Surprisingly, more retail areas in cities are adversely associated with some social capital indicators. High connectivity did not necessarily encourage the development of social capital for small-medium cities. This study showed varied associations between density and social capital in small-medium, and large cities, with consistent results regarding land use mix.
