Methods of making zirconium basic carbonate are further described which involve titrating an aqueous slurry of sodium zirconium carbonate to a pH of from about 3.5 to about 4.0 with an acidic agent wherein the sodium zirconium carbonate has a moisture content of from about 15% to about 25% LOD in solid form. The process further involves washing the aqueous slurry containing the formed zirconium basic carbonate with water. A novel zirconium basic carbonate is further disclosed which has a minimum adsorption capacity of from about 30 to about 35 mg/PO4-P/gm SCZ; a minimum HCO3- content of from about 2 to about 4 mEq HCO3-gm/SCZ; a leachable Na+ content of from about 1.5 to about 2.0 mEq Na+/gm SCZ; and/or a pH range of titrated sodium zirconium carbonate of from about 6 to about 7.

Zirconium basic carbonate and methods of making the same

A method of making sodium zirconium carbonate is described which involves forming a mixture of zirconium oxychloride with soda ash and then heating at a sufficient temperature and for a sufficient time to form the sodium zirconium carbonate. Subsequent washing and filtration steps can further form parts of this process. A novel sodium zirconium carbonate is further described which contains from about 2 wt % to about 5 wt % Na + ; from about 44 wt % to about 50 wt % ZrO 2 ; from about 12 wt % to about 18 wt % CO 3 2− ; and from about 32 wt % to about 35 wt % H 2 O.

Light management films and methods of making light management films are described. The light management films contain an optical layer that contains polymeric material and zirconia particles. The zirconia particles are colloidal, crystalline, substantially non-associated, and have a narrow size distribution.

An improved slurry formulation for the production of a thermal and environmental barrier coatings are provided which can withstand high temperature applications. The slurry includes a combination of a coarse ceramic powder fraction having close porosity particles and a fine ceramic powder fraction. The combination of the two powders produces a bimodal particle size distribution having a controlled amount of closed porosity that imparts desirable properties to the coating produced. The finer solid particles are interdispersed within an aqueous binder to produce a ceramic matrix with sufficient mechanical strength. The closed porosity containing coarse particles are embedded within the resultant ceramic matrix and do not disintegrate under high temperature conditions to impart a temperature resistant, non-collapsing closed porosity to the coating which can also act as an environmental barrier..

Aqueous slurry for the production of thermal and environmental barrier coatings and processes for making and applying the same

Stabilized precursor solutions can be used to form radiation inorganic coating materials. The precursor solutions generally comprise metal suboxide cations, peroxide-based ligands and polyatomic anions. Design of the precursor solutions can be performed to achieve a high level of stability of the precursor solutions. The resulting coating materials can be designed for patterning with a selected radiation, such as ultraviolet light, x-ray radiation or electron beam radiation. The radiation patterned coating material can have a high contrast with respect to material properties, such that development of a latent image can be successful to form lines with very low line-width roughness and adjacent structures with a very small pitch.

The process produces a stabilized zirconia powder by first contacting zirconium basic carbonate particles with a stabilizer compound. This reacts the zirconium basic carbonate particles with the stabilizer compound through heterogeneous contact to form a stabilized zirconia precursor. The stabilizer compound is for stabilizing a phase structure selected from the group consisting of tetragonal phase, cubic phase and mixtures of tetragonal and cubic phases. And calcining the stabilized zirconia precursor removes gaseous by-­products and forms the stabilized zirconia powder. The stabilized zirconia powder has a phase structure selected from the group consisting of tetragonal, cubic and mixtures of tetragonal and cubic.

Method for manufacturing stabilized zirconia

Provided is a process for isolating zirconium peroxosulfate and its use, either as is or to prepare high purity zirconium compounds including powders of zirconium dioxide and stabilized zirconia. The process is based on precipitating a peroxide compound from an acidic peroxide solution of zirconium and provides a simple, economical method for producing the zirconium peroxosulfate powder and its derivatives with degree of zirconium recovery more than 99%. This process further provides an effective method for the separation and purification of zirconium from a variety of elements and/or naturally occurring ores.
