Abstract: Data secured on healthy populations by life insurance companies have identified certain findings such as obesity and hypertension as associated with diminished life expectancy. Exact studies, similar in aim, have not been made on the ordinary clinical findings of hospital patients. Consequently, the physician's conceptions of the comparative prognostic value of certain symptoms suggesting cardiac abnormality, of cardiac enlargement, and of electrocardiographic abnormalities seem based more often on impression and tradition than on exact knowledge.
