One-dimensional (1D) ZnO nanostructures have been studied intensively and extensively over the last decade not only for their remarkable chemical and physical properties, but also for their current and future diverse technological applications. This article gives a comprehensive overview of the progress that has been made within the context of 1D ZnO nanostructures synthesized via wet chemical methods. We will cover the synthetic methodologies and corresponding growth mechanisms, different structures, doping and alloying, position-controlled growth on substrates, and finally, their functional properties as catalysts, hydrophobic surfaces, sensors, and in nanoelectronic, optical, optoelectronic, and energy harvesting devices.

Publisher Summary This chapter offers information on homoleptic complexes of 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy). The chapter focuses on the class of complexes that contain only bpy ligands bonded to the metal. The unique metal-binding properties of bpy were recognized from the outset. The third renaissance in bpy chemistry can be traced to the commercial availability of the ligand in the 1950s, when large amounts were required for the preparation of Diquat insecticides. The current interest in complexes of bpy is associated with the extremely interesting electrochemical, photophysical, and photoelectrochemical properties that they exhibit. 2,2'-Bipyridine is a strong field ligand that forms relatively stable complexes, with the inherent M–N bond strength enhanced by the chelate effect. Complexes with main group metal ions, and with lanthanides and actinides, can be prepared in water or organic solvents. The bis complexes are known for a range of metals and oxidation states though they tend to be more common for lower formal oxidation states. The bpy ligand is remarkable for the wide range of formal oxidation states with which it is associated. The chapter discusses the general trends in the reactivity of specific complexes under the appropriate elements. Iron, ruthenium, and osmium have played a crucial role in the development of the chemistry of 2,2'-bipyridine.

Homoleptic Complexes of 2,2′-Bipyridine

To prepare highly N-doped carbon materials (HNCs) as well as to determine the influence of N dopants on Na-ion storage performance, hexamine-based metal-organic frameworks are employed as new and efficient precursors in the preparation of HNCs. The HNCs possess reversible capacities as high as 160 and 142 mA h g-1 at 2 A g-1 (≈8 C) and 5 A g-1 (≈20 C), respectively, and maintain values of 145 and 123 mA h g-1 after 500 cycles, thus exhibiting excellent rate and long-term cyclic performance. Based on systematic analysis, a new insight into the roles of the different N configurations in Na-ion storage is proposed. The adsorption of Na ions on pyridinic-N (N-6) and pyrrolic-N (N-5) is fully irreversible, whereas the adsorption on graphitic-N (N-Q) is partially reversible and the adsorption on N-oxide (N-O) is fully reversible. More importantly, the N-6/N-Q ratio is an intrinsic parameter that reflects the relationship between the N configurations and carbon textures for N-doped carbons prepared from in situ pyrolysis of organic precursors. The cyclic stability and rate-performance improve with decreasing N-6/N-Q ratio. Therefore, this work is of great significance for the design of N-doped carbon electrodes with high performance for sodium ion batteries.

Coordination compounds of copper(II) chloride, bromide, thiocyanate and sulphate with nicotinic acid, nicotinamide and isonicotinamide have been prepared and characterized by molecular conductance, magnetic susceptibility, electronic and i.r. spectral measurements down to 200 cm−1 in the solid state. Possible stereochemistries for these complexes in the solid state are discussed.
