Compositions for the treatment/prevention of microbial diseases of fruit comprising an effective amount of at least one yeast strain selected from the species Rhodotorula glutinis (Fres.) Harrison and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa (Jorg.) Harrison; optionally in association with one or more agriculturally acceptable carriers or excipients are described, as well as methods involving the same. Compositions may be applied to fruit either pre-harvest or post-harvest with post-harvest treatment being preferred. Microbial diseases of fruit which may be treated include blue mold, grey mold, mucor rot and transit rot of fruit.

The antibiotic substance oxaspirol A has the following physical and chemical properties. Appearance, white powder having a melting point of 105-107 deg.C; specific rotation, [alpha]D =-275 deg. (C=0.4, CH3OH); molecular formula, C17H22O5; molecular eight, 306.1489 (by high-resolution mass-spectrometry); solubility, easily soluble in chloroform, ethyl acetate, acetone and methanol, hardly soluble in benzene, insoluble in water and n-hexane; color reactions, positive to iodine vapor and KMnO4 reagent, negative to FeCl3, ninhydrin and indophenol reagent; etc.

PREPARATION:Variant No.54-1 (FERM P-8530) of Rhodotorula glutinis T-110 is cultivated and oxaspirol is collected from a culture mixture. The antibiotic has the following physical and chemical properties. Properties of substance: oily state at normal temperature. Specific rotatory power [alpha]D -430 deg. (C=0.8, CH3OH). Solubility: readily soluble in chloroform, ethyl acetate, acetone and methanol, slightly soluble in benzene, insoluble in water and n-hexane. Color reaction: positive in iodine gas and KMnO4 reagent, negative in FeCl3, ninhydrin, and indophenol reagent, etc.
