Production of a standard closed fracture in laboratory animal bone.

Femoral fractures were created in rats to determine whether there were differences in healing under conditions of immobilization and under conditions of immediate weight-bearing. Histological and roentgenographic differences were present by the second week after fracture and differences in mechanical properties were also present. These differences became progressively greater during the next three weeks. Functional weight-bearing was found to accelerate the rate of fracture healing and to improve significantly the strength of the healing bone.

Pulsed electromagnetic field treatments enhance the healing of fibular osteotomies

Fracture healing is influenced by mechanical and biologic factors. The capacity for fracture repair has been reported to decrease with age, although the risk of fracture increases with age. Fracture healing in an animal model of postmenopausal osteoporosis or osteopenia would provide a useful technique to evaluate and develop new treatment protocols. The authors examined the tensile and bending properties of healing femoral fractures in normal and ovariectomized rats. Mechanical data from tensile and bending tests indicate ovariectomy impairs fracture healing, which was confirmed through histologic study. Bending and tensile data provide useful information concerning the mechanical properties of the healing fracture. Tensile tests were noted to be sensitive indicators of the properties of the healing fracture.

Fracture healing in a rat osteopenia model

Osteotomy of the rat femur performed by the laser was compared to osteotomty made by a hand-saw cut. It was noted that, radiographically and histologically, there was a delay in healing in the laser group, but biomechanical testing failed to reveal any significant difference in bone strength.
