In The Cowboy Girl: The Life of Caroline a life of comfort and celebrity on the east and political and romantic rivals, but also as newspaper publisher, a well-known novelist, a cattle rancher, a tireless booster for Cody, Wyoming, and a founder of the renowned "Cody Stampede" rodeo. Lockhart's early years in journalism resembled those of her contemporary, Nellie Bly. Both debuted as "stunt reporters," producing sensational features and exposes. Lockhart started out at the Boston Post in 1894, where she earned acclaim for spending Christmas Eve on the street in a squalid Boston neighborhood, wearing bloomers for a day, and working as a cranberry picker. In 1895, she interviewed Buffalo Bill Cody when his Wild West Show came to the city, which whetted her appetite for frontier life. She began working as a travel writer for the Philadelphia Bulletin in 1899, filing stories from locations throughout Europe, and within a few years, she was writing for Lippincotts magazine, a national literary journal. In 1904, Lockhart relocated to Cody, where she began turning out Westernthemed short stories for the nation's top general-circulation magazines, including McClure's and Century. Over the next six years, she published nearly twenty short stories, and her first novel, Me-Smith, was serialized in the New York World in 1911. Her best-known novels were The Lady Doc (1912) and The Fighting Shepherdess (1919), both of which illustrated her fascination with the hardscrabble life of the cowboy. Her novels were praised by critics, including H.L. Mencken, who described her use of local vernacular as "gorgeous and glowing" and compared her writing to Sinclair Lewis. Lockhart returned to her newspaper roots in 1920, when she began a five-year stint as publisher of the Cody Enterprise and used the newspaper to carry on personal vendettas against local political enemies, which enraged town residents. As publisher, she was well-known for taking strong stands on national issues, notably against Prohibition, which earned the Enterprise a national reputation as a "wet" newspaper. By 1926, Lockhart had soured on the newspaper business and was living year-round as a homesteader in the arid Dryhead area of southern Montana, seeking over a twentyyear period to build her "L Slash Heart" ranch into one of the state's largest. …

The Cowboy Girl: The Life of Caroline Lockhart

The article offers insights on how code-switching (CS) as a linguistic device and mechanism has served as an act of empowerment for the bilingual filmmaker to challenge government domination. Bahasa gado-gado, an Indonesian-English CS, is normatively unfavorable language use in Indonesia. The negative sentiment toward CS has been expressed by many Indonesians and the government. This article investigates the English switches in otherwise Indonesian popular cinematic texts: two films released after 1998, a critical political moment in Indonesia. Since the collapse of the New Order era in 1998, the use of bahasa gado-gado has been significantly visible in public spaces. Using a textual interpretive analysis, I show how CS is a tool used by characters to express "non-normative" sexual orientations in a liberating and open manner; by extension, CS in this context serves to expand monolithic definitions of Indonesianness.

Over the past decade, LGBT figures have become increasingly visible on Israeli television in its various channels and genres, especially cis-gendered gay men. In recent years, however, the representation of gay people on Israeli television has undergone a considerable shift, whereby many television texts feature gay men as fathers. These texts usually present gay parenthood as a positive phenomenon and sometimes even as more successful than heteronormative parenthood. The recasting of gay parenthood as positive is achieved through various devices, some of which are familiar from other places around the world, while others touch on unique features of Jewish-Israeli reality. In this article, I lay out the various strategies through which gay fatherhood is recast as positive on Israeli television and present the possible costs of this positive (and normative) representation of gay fatherhood. I focus on the television serial drama Ima VeAbbaz ( Mom and Dads ), whose protagonists are two gay men who have a child with a straight woman. I argue that the show manages to deviate from the usual representation of the gay father, thereby offering an ideological alternative to conventional and conservative (even if accepting) perspectives on gay parenting.
