Two methods for quantifying the development of dominance hierarchies in large groups with applications to Harris' sparrows

TL;DR: Two new methods for quantitatively describing behavioural processes of hierarchy formation in large groups are introduced and it is indicated that different behavioural mechanisms may be involved in hierarchy formation for large and small groups and that some configurations of interactions in triads are much more stable than others.
Journal ArticleDOI

The Fragility of Individual-Based Explanations of Social Hierarchies: A Test Using Animal Pecking Orders.

TL;DR: An example of a dynamic approach that considers dominance hierarchies to be dynamic networks, uses dynamic sequences of interaction (dynamic network motifs) to explain the organization of dominance hierarchie, and derives these dynamic sequences directly from observation of hierarchy formation is developed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Chains of opportunity: A Markov model for acquisition of reusable resources

TL;DR: In this paper, a Markov model simulating a vacancy chain process is presented for shell acquisition in hermit crabs, and the authors test the model against field data and show that the model adequately describes shell acquisition and that models combining shell size and crude estimates of quality fit the data extremely well.
