Effective Teaching in Schools Theory and Practice

Background. Virtual reality (VR) simulators for surgical training might possess the properties needed for basic training in laparoscopy. Evidence for training efficacy of VR has been investigated by research of varying quality over the past decade. Objective. To review randomized controlled trials regarding VR training efficacy compared with traditional or no training, with outcome measured as surgical performance in humans or animals. Data sources. In June 2011 Medline, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science and Google Scholar were searched using the following medical subject headings (MeSh) terms: Laparoscopy/standards, Computing methodologies, Programmed instruction, Surgical procedures, Operative, and the following free text terms: Virtual real* OR simulat* AND Laparoscop* OR train* Limits: Controlled trials. Study eligibility criteria. All randomized controlled trials investigating the effect of VR training in laparoscopy, with outcome measured as surgical performance. Methods. A total of 98 studies were screened, 26 selected and 12 included, with a total of 241 participants. Results. Operation time was reduced by 17–50% by VR training, depending on simulator type and training principles. Proficiency-based training appeared superior to training based on fixed time or fixed numbers of repetition. Simulators offering training for complete operative procedures came out as more efficient than simulators offering only basic skills training. Conclusions. Skills in laparoscopic surgery can be increased by proficiency-based procedural VR simulator training. There is substantial evidence (grade IA – IIB) to support the use of VR simulators in laparoscopic training.

The efficacy of virtual reality simulation training in laparoscopy: a systematic review of randomized trials.

Educational systems around the world have rapidly experiencing changes and reforms, impacting to teachers’ job performance. Despite these changes, discussion on how to predict teachers’ performance is complex and remains difficult to evaluate. This study addresses the gap in the literature by investigating the role of emotional intelligence in teachers’ job performance. This study analyses the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) which consists four dimensions: self-regulations, self-awareness, self-motivation and social skill (relationship management) and job performance. Respondents were 212 teachers in 6 secondary schools in Kedah. Data was collected through questionnaire survey and a significant correlation emerges from the data between emotional intelligence and job satisfaction. Overall, this research contributes to the emotional intelligence literatures by providing meaningful management implications to the school administrators and Malaysian higher education system.

Emotional Intelligence and Job Performance: A Study among Malaysian Teachers☆

This study used an ABAB design to investigate the effectiveness of social stories as an intervention with five school children who were experiencing difficulties at school lunchtime related to independently entering the dining hall. Measurements of general behaviour using the Conners’ Teacher Rating Scale‐Revised (CTRS‐R:L): Long Version and social cognition were also taken. The results showed an increase in targeted behaviour when social stories were used for three of the five children. The profile of results from the CTRS‐R and social cognitive tasks indicated that social stories were an effective intervention for children who had poor social skills and difficulties understanding the perspective of others.

Using Social Stories to Change Problematic Lunchtime Behaviour in School

WHATEVER criticism Prof. Welton's book may excite, it is undeniably interesting-the most interesting book dealing with its particular problems that has been produced in recent years. With great ability and clearness, the author has drawn a map of life, not as the adult lives it, but as it develops in form and complexity from infancy to manhood. The teacher and the situations with which he deals are in his mind all through. His book is therefore not a treatise on psychology, yet the psychologist's point of view is so dominant that neither does it set forth a theory of education.
