Efficient methods for encoding regions of interest in the upcoming JPEG2000 still image coding standard

TL;DR: A method for ROI coding that does not require any shape information to be transmitted to the decoder is described, which makes it possible to have arbitrarily shaped ROI without the need of shape information and ROI mask generation at the decoding.

Efficient region of interest coding techniques in the upcoming JPEG2000 still image coding standard

TL;DR: This paper describes the "MAXSHIFT" method for ROI coding in the JPEG2000 standard, which allows coding of the ROIs without transmitting any shape information to the decoder, and shows that a ROI capable codec that handles arbitrarily shaped ROI, need not be significantly more complex than a non-ROI capable Codec.
