Energy is vital for sustainable development of any nation – be it social, economic or environment. In the past decade energy consumption has increased exponentially globally. Energy management is crucial for the future economic prosperity and environmental security. Energy is linked to industrial production, agricultural output, health, access to water, population, education, quality of life, etc. Energy demand management is required for proper allocation of the available resources. During the last decade several new techniques are being used for energy demand management to accurately predict the future energy needs. In this paper an attempt is made to review the various energy demand forecasting models. Traditional methods such as time series, regression, econometric, ARIMA as well as soft computing techniques such as fuzzy logic, genetic algorithm, and neural networks are being extensively used for demand side management. Support vector regression, ant colony and particle swarm optimization are new techniques being adopted for energy demand forecasting. Bottom up models such as MARKAL and LEAP are also being used at the national and regional level for energy demand management.

Modeling and Forecasting Electricity Loads and Prices: A Statistical Approach

Load forecasting (LF) plays important role in planning and operation of power systems. It is envisioned that future smart grids will utilize LF and dynamic pricing based techniques for effective Demand Side Management (DSM). This paper presents a comprehensive and comparative review of the LF and dynamic pricing schemes in smart grid environment. Real Time Pricing (RTP), Time of Use (ToU) and Critical Peak Pricing (CPP) are discussed in detail. Two major categories of LF: mathematical and artificial intelligence based computational models are elaborated with subcategories. Mathematical models including auto recursive, moving average, auto recursive moving average, auto recursive integrated moving average, exponential smoothing, iterative reweighted mean square, multiple regression, etc. used for effective DSM are discussed. Neural networks, fuzzy logic, expert systems of the second major category of LF models have also been described.

Load forecasting, dynamic pricing and DSM in smart grid: A review

ARIMA-based decoupled time series forecasting of electric vehicle charging demand for stochastic power system operation

Day-ahead load forecast using random forest and expert input selection

Short-term load forecasting plays an important role in electric power system operation and planning. An accurate load forecasting not only reduces the generation cost in a power system, but also provides a good principle of effective operation. In this paper, the ARIMA model and transfer function model are applied to the short-term load forecasting by considering weather-load relationship. For four types of customer in Taiwan power (Taipower) system, residential load, commercial load, office load and industrial load customers, the summer ARIMA model transfer function model have been derived to proceed the short-term load forecasting during one week. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, this paper compares the results of the transfer function model and the univariate ARIMA model with conventional regression. Besides, the transfer function model's accuracy of the load forecast on weekday and weekend is thoroughly investigated. To improve the accuracy level of load forecast, the temperature effect is considered in the transfer function. According to the short-term load forecasting for these four customer classes, it is concluded that the proposed method can achieve better accuracy of load forecast than the ARIMA model by considering the causality between power consumption and temperature.
