The mechanics of the bending of yarns and woven fabrics have received considerable attention in the literature. Efforts have been made to obtain analytical relations between yarn-bending behaviour and constituent-fibre properties. In the case of fabrics, the objectives have been to obtain analytical relations between fabric-bending behaviour and constituent-fibre behaviour or yarn behaviour, on the assumption of a given geometrical disposition of fibres or yarns in the fabric. In this paper, a review of these efforts is made. Comparisons of the theoretical models with available experimental observations are discussed.

The Bending Behaviour of Plain-woven Fabrics Part I: A Critical Review

The bending behaviour of square plain-weave fabrics spun and woven from nineteen different fibres, each in a range of cover factors, has been studied. It is shown how this behaviour is determined by the mechanical properties of the fibre and the frictional and geometrical restraints within and between yams in the fabric. The effects on these restraints of cover factor and of relaxation in wet finishing and in heat-setting are examined. Factors affecting cloth stiffness are summarized, and it is shown that two quantities, an elastic component and a frictional component, are required to specify the bending behaviour with reasonable completeness.

A model for woven fabric behavior in bending is formulated based on a representation of fabric deformation as a coordinate transformation. The model is essentially based on previously published assumptions of yarn behavior but provides predictions closer to real fabric properties. It uses the energy approach for mechanical problems of textiles and employs a polynomial approximation of the thread shape. The mathematically subtle contact problem of yarns within a fabric can be turned into a more general consideration of yarn compression, and this can be investigated by independent, practical experimen tation. Comparison with previously published experimental data for a variety of thread types and fabric parameters shows reasonable agreement between predicted and measured bending stiffness of plain woven fabric.
