Since the appearance of the title paper, a number of new developments have occurred which need to be included in that body of material. We present additional remarks and clarifications which supplement and update numerous aspects of the Bethe theory discussed in the earlier paper. We also bring the bibliography up to date. Plasma stopping power, the ${z}^{3}$ effect, and stopping power for particles at extreme relativistic energies are among the new topics included. We make several comments on Fano's earlier review article, Ann. Rev. Nucl. Sci. 13, 1 (1963).

Nuclear charge and magnetization density distribution parameters from elastic electron scattering

By combining the ${q}_{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}i\ensuremath{\infty}$ method for asymptotic sum rules with the $P\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$ method of Fubini and Furlan, we relate the structure functions ${W}_{2}$ and ${W}_{1}$ in inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering to matrix elements of commutators of currents at almost equal times at infinite momentum. We argue that the infinite-momentum limit for these commutators does not diverge, but may vanish. If the limit is nonvanishing, we predict $\ensuremath{\nu}{W}_{2}(\ensuremath{\nu}, {q}^{2})\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{f}_{2}(\frac{\ensuremath{\nu}}{{q}^{2}})$ and ${W}_{1}(\ensuremath{\nu}, {q}^{2})\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{f}_{1}(\frac{\ensuremath{\nu}}{{q}^{2}})$ as $\ensuremath{\nu}$ and ${q}^{2}$ tend to $\ensuremath{\infty}$. From a similar analysis for neutrino processes, we conclude that at high energies the total neutrino-nucleon cross sections rise linearly with neutrino laboratory energy until nonlocality of the weak current-current coupling sets in. The sum of $\ensuremath{\nu}p$ and $\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\nu}}p$ cross sections is determined by the equal-time commutator of the Cabibbo current with its time derivative, taken between proton states at infinite momentum.

Asymptotic Sum Rules at Infinite Momentum

Existing data on the condensation of steam and moist air in supersonic nozzles are compared with predictions based on nucleation and drop-growth theory. It is concluded that, if the surface tension is assumed independent of curvature, and the classical liquid-drop theory (based on a stationary liquid drop) is used, the theory is in general agreement with the data. The effects of uncertainties in cluster surface energy and also of the large corrections to nucleation theory due to the ‘gasification’ concept are examined. The gasification correction is in accord with experimental data only if the surface tension is considered to rise significantly with curvature. In neither case can the Tolman or Kirkwood–Buff equations be supported. A review of existing data shows that there is some question as to the appropriate value of the condensation coefficient but this is of little consequence as long as the accommodation coefficient for the liquid–vapour surface is taken to be unity. The usefulness of the nozzle experiments for testing the validity of nucleation theory is demonstrated.
