The development of femtosecond time-resolved methods for the study of gas-phase molecular dynamics is founded upon the seminal studies of Zewail and co-workers, as recognized in 1999 by the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.1 This methodology has been applied to chemical reactions ranging in complexity from bond-breaking in diatomic molecules to dynamics in larger organic and biological molecules, and has led to breakthroughs in our understanding of fundamental chemical processes. Photoexcited polyatomic molecules and anions often exhibit quite complex dynamics involving the redistribution of both charge and energy.2-6 These processes are the primary steps in the photochemistry of many polyatomic systems,7 are important in photobiological processes such as vision and photosynthesis,8 and underlie many concepts in molecular electronics.9 Femtosecond time-resolved methods involve a pump-probe configuration in which an ultrafast pump pulse initiates a reaction or, more generally, creates a nonstationary state or wave packet, the evolution of which is monitored as a function of time by means of a suitable probe pulse. Time-resolved or wave packet methods offer a view complementary to the usual spectroscopic approach and often yield a physically intuitive picture. Wave packets can behave as zeroth-order or even classical-like states and are therefore very helpful in discerning underlying dynamics. The information obtained from these experiments is very much dependent on the nature of the final state chosen in a given probe scheme. Transient absorption and nonlinear wave mixing are often the methods of choice in condensed-phase experiments because of their generality. In studies of molecules and clusters in the gas phase, the most popular methods, laser-induced fluorescence and resonant multiphoton ionization, usually require the probe laser to be resonant with an electronic transition in the species being monitored. However, as a chemical reaction initiated by the pump pulse evolves toward products, one expects that both the electronic and vibrational structures of the species under observation will change. Femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy.

Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy has been performed for more than 70 years in various guises, but recently its potential to help solve in detail problems in the photoionization dynamics and intramolecular dynamics of gas-phase molecules has been recognized. One key development has been the design of experiments in appropriate geometries to extract information that pertains to the molecular frame, another has been the development of imaging spectrometers, and a third is the use of ultrafast lasers to cause photoionization. In this review, which is aimed at experimentalists, simple expressions for photoelectron angular distributions (PADs) in various experimental geometries are given and their applications explained.

Photoelectron angular distributions.

The observation of coherent dynamics ensuing from the excitation of molecular systems by femtosecond laser pulses is at the heart of femtochemistry. The time-dependent evolution of coherent superpositions of quantum states, the physical basis for the observation of coherent dynamics and their manipulation are of central importance to coherent control of physicochemical processes. In the early days of femtochemistry, there was significant skepticism regarding the type of information that could be learned from spectroscopic experiments using very short pulses. There were arguments that one could infer the dynamics from frequency-resolved experiments and that the femtosecond experiments did not offer new information. It was also assumed that experiments with very short pulses would smear the available spectroscopic information because of their broad bandwidths. Approximately two decades after the initial experiments, it has become clear that femtosecond experiments have opened an extremely valuable window into the dynamic behavior of atomic and molecular systems that is influencing how we think about physics, chemistry, and biology. In particular, we highlight the fact that some of the highest resolution spectroscopic measurements being carried out employ femtosecond laser pulses. These experiments, specifically those taking advantage of rotational coherence, provide resolution that rivals microwave spectroscopy. The reason spectroscopic information is not lost in femtochemistry experiments is coherence, a property that can be manipulated to control physicochemical processes by a number of different approaches, which will be reviewed here. This review presents a summary of some of the most salient contributions to the field of coherent laser control from an experimentalist’s perspective. While a number of theoretical papers have made key contributions to the field, it is from the experimental successes, as well as failures, that we can best learn how to implement new strategies and develop future applications. Coherent laser control, in the context of this review, encompasses experiments in which the coherent properties of the laser and/or the molecule are required for controlling a particular physicochemical process. Collisions of atoms and ions with surfaces under grazing incidence

Ion imaging methods are making ever greater impact on studies of gas phase molecular reaction dynamics. This article traces the evolution of the technique, highlights some of the more important breakthroughs with regards to improving image resolution and in image processing and analysis methods, and then proceeds to illustrate some of the many applications to which the technique is now being applied—most notably in studies of molecular photodissociation and of bimolecular reaction dynamics.

Imaging the dynamics of gas phase reactions

We present the first results using a new technique that combines femtosecond pump–probe methods with energy- and angle-resolved photoelectron–photoion coincidence imaging. The dominant dissociative multiphoton ionization (DMI) pathway for NO2 at 375.3 nm is identified as three-photon excitation to a repulsive potential surface correlating to NO(C 2Π)+O(3P) followed by one-photon ionization to NO+(X 1Σ+). Dissociation along this surface is followed on a femtosecond timescale.
