Movement, migration, and smolting of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)

The present paper reviews the effects of water temperature and flow on migrations, embryonic development, hatching, emergence, growth and life-history traits in light of the ongoing climate change with emphasis on anadromous Atlantic salmon Salmo salar and brown trout Salmo trutta. The expected climate change in the Atlantic is for milder and wetter winters, with more precipitation falling as rain and less as snow, decrease in ice-covered periods and frequent periods with extreme weather. Overall, thermal limits for salmonids are species specific. Scope for activity and growth and optimal temperature for growth increase with temperature to an optimal point before constrain by the oxygen content of the water. The optimal temperature for growth decreases with increasing fish size and varies little among populations within species, whereas the growth efficiency may be locally adapted to the temperature conditions of the home stream during the growth season. Indirectly, temperature influences age and size at smolting through its effect on growth. Time of spawning, egg hatching and emergence of the larvae vary with temperature and selective effects on time of first feeding. Traits such as age at first maturity, longevity and fecundity decrease with increasing temperature whilst egg size increases with temperature. Water flow influences the accessibility of rivers for returning adults and speed of both upstream and downstream migration. Extremes in water flow and temperature can decrease recruitment and survival. There is reason to expect a northward movement of the thermal niche of anadromous salmonids with decreased production and population extinction in the southern part of the distribution areas, migrations earlier in the season, later spawning, younger age at smolting and sexual maturity and increased disease susceptibility and mortality. Future research challenges are summarized at the end of the paper.

A review of the likely effects of climate change on anadromous Atlantic salmon Salmo salar and brown trout Salmo trutta, with particular reference to water temperature and flow.

The olfactory hypothesis of the salmonids' homing assumes that the juvenile is conditioned to recognize a specific scent of its native river during the smolt stage and that it uses this characteristic to locate its river for upstream migration. We tested this hypothesis and exposed, in artificial conditions, some farmed coho salmon, rainbow trout and fario trout, aged 18 months, to a chemical (morpholine or alcoolphenetyl) introduced in the natural production environment (mixed with the scents of the native river), in order to determine if they will be responsive to this product to locate their initial production environment during upstream migration.

Olfactory imprinting and homing in salmon

Salmonid fishes are typically anadromous, that is, they achieve the bulk of their growth in the sea, and migrate into rivers to reproduce. As juveniles, they may arrive in the estuary almost immediately after emergence from a gravel bed in the river, or after a few days, weeks, months, or years in fresh water, according to species and developmental opportunity. Thereafter, the length of estuarine residence depends on the estuary’s size, shape, and productivity; on water flow patterns and velocities; on salinity and temperature; and on the species and size of the salmon. It is supposed that estuaries offer salmonids three primary advantages: productive foraging, relative refuge from predators, and a physically intermediate environment for transition from fresh water to marine physiological control systems. The present paper finds the evidence for the foraging advantage strong, for the predator refuge equivocal, and for the physiological transition function applicable particularly to Pacific species migrant at the fry stage.

Salmonid fishes and the estuarine environment

The sensory basis of rheotaxis (orientation to currents) was investigated in the blind Mexican cave fish, Astyanax fasciatus. An unconditioned rheotactic response to uniform velocity flows was exhibited, with a threshold of less than 3 cm s−1. Disabling the entire lateral line or the superficial neuromast receptor class increased the rheotactic threshold to greater than 9 cm s−1. A pharmacological block of the lateral line canal system alone had no effect. These results demonstrate that the superficial lateral line system controls rheotaxis at low current velocities. The effect of pairing an odor stimulant with the water current dropped the rheotactic threshold to less than 0.4 cm s−1. This study provides a clear behavioral role for the superficial neuromasts where none previously existed, and also establishes a link between the mechanosensory lateral line and olfactory systems in the olfactory search behavior of the cave fish.

The sensory basis of rheotaxis in the blind Mexican cave fish, Astyanax fasciatus

Ultrasonic telemetry was used to follow the movements of two groups of smolts in the estuaries of two small Scottish rivers. Hatchery reared smolts released into a typical wedge flow, partially mixed estuary had movements which were dominated by the influence of tide on the direction of water flow. The net movements of wild native smolts in a two layer flow estuary, in which freshwater flow dominated, was downstream but were intermittent consisting of short steps and numerous long pauses. The hatchery reared smolts escaped from the estuary within a tidal cycle, moving out on an ebb tide. The wild smolts remained in the estuary for periods up to 108 h, none escaping within one tidal cycle.
