A power converter nearly losslessly delivers energy and recovers energy from capacitors associated with controlled rectifiers in a secondary winding circuit, each controlled rectifier having a parallel uncontrolled rectifier. First and second primary switches in series with first and second primary windings, respectively, are turned on for a fixed duty cycle, each for approximately one half of the switching cycle. Switched transition times are short relative to the on-state and off-state times of the controlled rectifiers. The control inputs to the controlled rectifiers are cross-coupled from opposite secondary transformer windings.

High efficiency power converter

A switching regulator electronic power supply for 115 volt A.C. operation rectifies and filters to provide approximately 170 volts of unregulated D.C. to the primary winding of a power conversion transformer. In series with the primary winding is a transistor power switch controlled by a pulse width modulator whose ON-time is determined by the rectified D.C. voltage level, and whose OFF-time is controlled by an output voltage sensor and a current limiter that provide duty cycles that assure a constant D.C. voltage level from the rectified and filtered output of the power supply.

A DC power supply circuit of the switching or chopping type for converting a voltage from an AC power source or from a DC power source into a predetermined DC voltage and supplying the converted DC voltage to a load, comprises a converting transformer having first and second primary windings and a secondary winding and first and second switching circuits connected to the first and second primary windings, respectively, and being selectively operated for switching or chopping the voltage applied from the AC or DC power source to the respective primary winding thereby to produce a pulse voltage at the secondary winding of the converting transformer to which a rectifier circuit is connected. The converted DC voltage obtained at the output of the rectifier circuit is connected. The converted DC voltage obtained at the output of the rectifier circuit is compared with a reference voltage, and the switching circuits are controlled on the basis of such comparison for maintaining the converted DC voltage at a predetermined level.

Power supply system

A closed-loop regulated dc-to-dc converter employing an unregulated two-winding inductive-energy storage converter is provided by using a magnetically coupled multivibrator acting as a duty-cycle generator to drive the converter. The multivibrator is comprised of two transistor switches and a saturable transformer. The output of the converter is compared with a reference in a comparator which transmits a binary zero until the output exceeds the reference. When the output exceeds the reference, the binary output of the comparator drives transistor switches, via a dc isolation circuit, which control the multivibrator to turn the multivibrator off. The multivibrator is unbalanced so that a predetermined transistor will always turn on first when the binary feedback signal becomes zero.
