DC power systems are gaining an increasing interest in renewable energy applications because of the good matching with dc output type sources such as photovoltaic (PV) systems and secondary batteries. In this paper, several distributed generators (DGs) have been merged together with a pair of batteries and loads to form an autonomous dc microgrid (MG). To overcome the control challenge associated with coordination of multiple batteries within one stand-alone MG, a double-layer hierarchical control strategy was proposed. 1) The unit-level primary control layer was established by an adaptive voltage-droop method aimed to regulate the common bus voltage and to sustain the states of charge (SOCs) of batteries close to each other during moderate replenishment. The control of every unit was expanded with unit-specific algorithm, i.e., finish-of-charging for batteries and maximum power-point tracking (MPPT) for renewable energy sources, with which a smooth online overlap was designed and 2) the supervisory control layer was designed to use the low-bandwidth communication interface between the central controller and sources in order to collect data needed for adaptive calculation of virtual resistances (VRs) as well as transit criteria for changing unit-level operating modes. Supervisory Control of an Adaptive-Droop Regulated DC Microgrid With Battery Management Capability

A VSC-MTDC (multi-terminal dc) system consists of voltage-source converters (VSCs) connected to a dc network at their dc terminals. The MTDC is most vulnerable to a dc fault which paralyses all the VSCs until the dc fault is cleared. As dc circuit breakers are expensive, this paper proposes a solution based on extinguishing the dc fault current by opening all the ac-circuit breakers (ac-CBs) which the VSCs are already equipped with on the ac-sides. However, it is necessary to identify which dc line is the faulted line (in case it is a permanent fault) so that it can be isolated by fast dc switches (which are much more economical than the dc circuit breakers), prior to restoring the MTDC system by re-closing all the ac-CBs. This paper presents the handshaking method, which locates and isolates the faulted dc line and restores the MTDC without telecommunication.

Locating and Isolating DC Faults in Multi-Terminal DC Systems

In this paper, the use of DC power system to supply sensitive electronic loads is treated. First, general design issues regarding DC power systems are discussed, and then the measurement results from a scaled laboratory setup are presented. The results show that it is possible to supply sensitive electronic loads through an AC/DC interface, and to keep them online during grid transients. The use of a DC power system to supply sensitive electronic loads will have lower losses compared with a conventional AC uninterruptible power-supply solution due to fewer power conversion steps.

Low-Voltage DC Distribution System for Commercial Power Systems With Sensitive Electronic Loads

Although it has long been argued that electronic power converters can help improve system controllability, reliability, size, and efficiency, their penetration in power systems is still quite low. The often-cited barriers of higher cost and lower reliability of the power converters are quite high if power electronics is used as direct, one-to-one, replacement for the existing electromechanical equipment. However, if the whole power distribution system were designed as a system of controllable converters, the overall system cost and reliability could actually improve, as is currently the case at low power levels within computer and telecom equipment. Starting from the example of a computer power system, the paper contemplates possible future ac and dc electronic power distribution system architectures, especially in the presence of renewable energy sources. The proposed nanogrid-microgrid-…-grid structure achieves hierarchical dynamic decoupling of generation, distribution, and consumption by using bidirectional converters as energy control centers. This is illustrated by the description and simulation of static and dynamic operation of a dc nanogrid in a hypothetical future sustainable home. Several ideas for modeling, analysis, and system-level design of such systems, including power flow control, protection, stability, and subsystem interactions, are presented.

DC microgrids and distribution systems: An overview

The US Navy is currently investigating the implementation of a DC zonal electric distribution system (DC ZEDS) for the next generation of surface combatant. In replacing the current AC radial distribution system, significant gains can be realized in terms of survivability, weight, manning and cost. DC ZEDS is predicated on having starboard and port DC buses feeding electrical zones delineated by watertight bulkhead compartments. The main bus DC voltage is stepped down within the zone and then converted to three-phase AC and lower voltage DC by additional power converters. Due to the large interconnection of tightly-regulated power converters in a stiffly-connected system, negative input impedance effects create the possibility of unwanted resonances. In this paper, the authors describe the rationale for the DC zonal system, characterize the stability issues, and discuss fault detection and load shedding problems.
