The pharmacology, toxicology and potential applications of arecoline: a review

Arecanut seed has been used for medicinal properties more than 2000 years in South Asian countries. In fact, various pharmacological activities have been found in the arecanut seed extract or its constituents. Prevention of oxidative stress induced diseases is an urgent problem in all over the world. Traditional use of the plant for medicinal properties is to be documented for their possible use as future medicines or drugs. There is a need for identifying native natural plant sources to acquire to their recognized medicinal properties, which may widen them to use as new therapeutics for various diseases. In the present article, it has been described about usefulness of arecanut as an herbal drug and its therapeutics application prospects.

A review on phytochemical and pharmacological potential of areca catechu l. seed

A subchronic toxicity test was conducted in rats on the basis of a previous acute toxicity test to evaluate the safety of arecoline hydrobromide (Ah), to systematically study its pharmacological effects and to provide experimental support for a safe clinical dose. Eighty rats were randomly divided into four groups: a high-dose group (1000 mg/kg), medium-dose group (200 mg/kg), low-dose group (100mg/kg) and blank control group. The doses were administered daily via gastric lavage for 14 consecutive days. There were no significant differences in the low-dose Ah group compared to the control group (P>0.05) with regard to body weight, organ coefficients, hematological parameters and histopathological changes. The high-dose of Ah influenced some of these parameters, which requires further study. The results of this study indicated that a long-term, continuous high dose of Ah was toxic. However, it is safe to use Ah according to the clinically recommended dosing parameters. The level of Ah at which no adverse effects were observed was 100 mg/kg/day under the present study conditions.

Areca catechu: A phytopharmacological legwork

Supari (Areca catechu Linn.) is a tall tree about 10–20 m long. It is used both locally and internally. Local application is beneficial in various acute inflammatory conditions in the form of gargle, vaginal douche or abzan, decoction, juice and oil. Internally it act as muqavvie-qalb (cardiotonic) and muqavvi-e-ama (intestinal tonic), sozish meda (gastric irritation), dries the excessive secretions of mouth, used in vomiting and nausea, strengthen the teeth and gums, excrete the bilious matter; bark powder expels intestinal worms, jiryan (nocturnal emission). It is also used in the treatment of ishaal (diarrhoea), sailan-ur-rehm (leucorrhoea), khurooje rahem wa miqad (prolapse of uterus and anus) in oral powder dosage form. Ethnobotanical actions have also been discussed which narrates the action of this magic medicine in different dosage forms. It possess various pharmacological activities such as antiplatelet activity, memory enhancing activity, antinociceptive activity, anti-allergic activity, hepatoprotective activity, anti-inflammatory activity and antimelanogenesis activity, antifertility activity, anti-ovulatory activity, antidiabetic activity, wound healing activity, antioxidative activity, free radical scavenging activity, antihyaluronidase activity, anti-aging activity, antiulcerogenic activity, ulcerogenic activity, antimicrobial study, radioactivity reducing activity in blood, cytotoxicity activity, carcinogenic and toxicity study which has been scientifically evaluated by various studies have been discussed in this paper. Phytochemical studies done so far are also been discussed but isolation of various new structures can make the drug worldwide accepted. This article is an overview of plant morphology, phytochemical studies done on different parts of Supari, biochemical compounds as functionally active molecules, action and uses of Supari claimed by Unani medicine, therapeutic effects studied all over the world, and pharmacological studies scientifically proven yet. The increasing-effect components for molluscicides isolated from the dry nut of Areca catech L. were studied. The results showed that arecoline was the most effective and it could decrease remarkably the amount of drugs i.e. saponium of Phytolacca acinosa, SPA, and sodium pentachloro phenate, NaPCP, when used together.
