Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present a systematic review and analysis of existing research articles on new product development (NPD) published in the 12-year period starting from 1998 to 2009. Design/methodology/approach – To explore the articles related to NPD, four key words namely new product, product design, product development and product innovation were used in combination of title or abstract or keyword of the articles through several knowledge databases. The abstracts of journal papers were read and a decision as to whether article belongs to any NPD research issue or not was made. In total, 1,127 research articles were categorized systematically and then analyzed on various principal NPD information groups. Findings – Analysis of selected articles led to a certain level of dispersion in the publication of NPD research in different journals. Analysis of new product development research: 1998-2009

Marketing not only creates economic value for a social enterprise, it also must create social value. This paper adopts a case research to five Thailand's food social entrepreneurs to examine how a marketing strategy creates social value. The findings revealed that the majority of them addressed a social problem in a marketing strategy to benefit producers and society. Key contributions include proposing and validating a holistic set of propositions of social enterprise marketing with social value generation. Recommendations for social enterprise marketers and policy-makers are also provided so that they can improve a marketing strategy to address social problems.

Creating Social Value Through Social Enterprise Marketing: Case Studies from Thailand's Food-Focused Social Entrepreneurs

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to review the role of new product development (NPD) in event venue operations by drawing on existing literature. The paper acknowledges product innovation as an under‐researched field in event venues and explores this within the context of seven diverse operations.Design/methodology/approach – Using a case study analysis methodology the research reveals a number of key findings.Findings – It is revealed that NPD is a fundamental process within event venues but takes a number of different forms, depending on the profit or non‐profit orientation of the organisation. Within this, the findings discuss the different aims, reasons and barriers of NPD.Originality/value – The paper concludes with the key issues to NPD that managers in event venues should be aware of and proposes a number of limitations and areas for future research.

Drivers and barriers of new product development and innovation in event venues

The majority of the extant research on human resource management (HRM) draws conclusions based on evidence from for-profit organizations. In response to calls for the exploration of HRM in different contexts, this study focuses on understanding HRM in the context of social enterprises. The unique context of social enterprises and their unique workforce raise questions about the direct applicability of frameworks developed from examining HRM in for-profit organizations. The narratives provided by 20 CEOs, HR directors, and managers of social enterprises in the United Kingdom highlight the importance of “ethics of care” as the core of the HRM-related decisions in the “third sector.” In addition, we identify five distinct workforce categories and propose a typology of differentiated HRM systems that enable social enterprises to achieve their dual mission. Finally, we propose a “virtuous circle” model, highlighting “ethics of care” as the main driver for organizational outcomes, using differentiated HRM systems that better serve their needs.

Leaders often seek out large donors but lack strategies for successfully doing so. Leaders often seek out large donors but lack strategies for successfully doing so. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the strategies successful nonprofit leaders have used to capture the attention of committed, large donors in Southern California. Government failure theory and independence theory constituted the conceptual framework. The purposeful sampling method consisted of 3 nonprofit agency managers who had operated a nonprofit for at least 5 years, while securing a longstanding partnership of large, committed donors. These managers substantiated having met the criteria in having successfully gained committed large donor(s), and operating in a geographic setting with no less than 50,000 residents. Data included participant interviews and company websites. Transcribed data were analyzed by comparing meanings that formulated clusters into themes, and then triangulated across sources to bolster the trustworthiness of interpretations. From these clusters, 5 distinctive themes were identified: cultivating donors, building personal relationships with donors, promoting the mission, understanding relationship contribution, and detailing directly what the donation will accomplish. Findings impact social change by fortifying nonprofits with committed large donors, to reduce need in society, and create greater financial independence within communities. Purpose – Charitable organizations have long been held out as separate from other human endeavors. One of the ways that this distinction has been maintained is through the use of a tax exemption. However, difficult economic times have caused state and local governments to search for additional revenues to make up for budget deficits. At the same time, there has been significant growth in the use of a new model for funding social missions as a social enterprise.
