Attempts have been made to find an analog of the BCS theory of electronic superconductivity in nuclear systems. The inability of a finite isolated nucleus at fixed excitation energy to show the energy fluctuations inherent in a system characterized by temperature is shown to lead to differences between the statistical behavior based on a fixedtempreature and a fixed-energy system.
