This tutorial presents an overview of the technological advances in millimeter-wave (mm-wave) circuit components, antennas, and propagation that will soon allow 60-GHz transceivers to provide multigigabit per second (multi-Gb/s) wireless communication data transfers in the consumer marketplace. Our goal is to help engineers understand the convergence of communications, circuits, and antennas, as the emerging world of subterahertz and terahertz wireless communications will require understanding at the intersections of these areas. This paper covers trends and recent accomplishments in a wide range of circuits and systems topics that must be understood to create massively broadband wireless communication systems of the future. In this paper, we present some evolving applications of massively broadband wireless communications, and use tables and graphs to show research progress from the literature on various radio system components, including on-chip and in-package antennas, radio-frequency (RF) power amplifiers (PAs), low-noise amplifiers (LNAs), voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs), mixers, and analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). We focus primarily on silicon-based technologies, as these provide the best means of implementing very low-cost, highly integrated 60-GHz mm-wave circuits. In addition, the paper illuminates characterization techniques that are required to competently design and fabricate mm-wave devices in silicon, and illustrates effects of the 60-GHz RF propagation channel for both in-building and outdoor use. The paper concludes with an overview of the standardization and commercialization efforts for 60-GHz multi-Gb/s devices, and presents a novel way to compare the data rate versus power efficiency for future broadband devices.

State of the Art in 60-GHz Integrated Circuits and Systems for Wireless Communications

This article presents an overview of optical wireless (OW) communication systems that operate both in the short- (personal and indoor systems) and the long-range (outdoor and hybrid) regimes. Each of these areas is discussed in terms of (a) key requirements, (b) their application framework, (c) major impairments and applicable mitigation techniques, and (d) current and/or future trends. Personal communication systems are discussed within the context of point-to-point ultra-high speed data transfer. The most relevant application framework and related standards are presented, including the next generation Giga-IR standard that extends personal communication speeds to over 1 Gb/s. As far as indoor systems are concerned, emphasis is given on modeling the dispersive nature of indoor OW channels, on the limitations that dispersion imposes on user mobility and dispersion mitigation techniques. Visible light communication systems, which provide both illumination and communication over visible or hybrid visible/infrared LEDs, are presented as the most important representative of future indoor OW systems. The discussion on outdoor systems focuses on the impact of atmospheric effects on the optical channel and associated mitigation techniques that extend the realizable link lengths and transfer rates. Currently, outdoor OW is commercially available at 10 Gb/s Ethernet speeds for Metro networks and Local-Area-Network interconnections and speeds are expected to increase as faster and more reliable optical components become available. This article concludes with hybrid optical wireless/radio-frequency (OW/RF) systems that employ an additional RF link to improve the overall system reliability. Emphasis is given on cooperation techniques between the reliable RF subsystem and the broadband OW system.

A review of communication-oriented optical wireless systems

A hybrid channel, consisting of a free space optical (FSO) link and a parallel radio frequency (RF) link, is considered. The FSO link carries most of the transmitted data while leaving only a small fraction of the data to be carried by the RF link. It is first shown that the capacity of the proposed hybrid structure is much higher than the capacity of a single FSO link. Next the performance of the hybrid channel is studied using a low density parity check code. A density evolution strategy for the hybrid channel is derived and a Gaussian approximation technique is presented. Using these techniques, the conditions for the convergence of the message passing algorithm in terms of minimum data carrying rate through the RF link are derived. Finally, numerical results showing the benefits of the hybrid channel under various channel conditions are presented.

Hybrid optical/RF channels: characterization and performance study using low density parity check codes

Wireless communication technologies such as microwave radios are used to provide high-speed mobile backhaul connectivity for radio access networks in cases in which wire-based alternatives, e.g. cable or fiber, are not readily available and cannot be deployed in an economic or timely manner. Current mobile backhauls are predominantly deployed in tree or ring topologies, which simplify traffic management. Yet, with the increasing demand on backhaul capacity and the immense cost pressure on mobile backhaul solutions, meshed wireless mobile backhauls have been identified as a promising evolution. While traffic management in wireless mesh networks have been studied extensively in the literature, so far there is no quantitative analysis comparing the different topology options, i.e. mesh, ring and tree, regarding network performance and deployment cost. This paper fills this gap by studying the minimum cost problem of connecting a set of base station/gateway sites using different topologies while supporting both time- and space-varying traffic demands. Furthermore, we consider the additional constraint of resilience to single link failures. The evaluation results show that meshed wireless backhaul topologies are a cost-effective alternative to trees and rings, in particular in the face of spatial and temporal fluctuation of traffic demand and protection against link failures.

A channel model of optical wireless communications during rainfall

Due to the consistently growing demand for high-speed wireless data access, future communication systems will necessarily have to enable real-time data access and high reliability as well as having superior weather resilience. Hybrid communication networks that integrate free space optics and RF systems are uniquely positioned to satisfy all the bandwidth, reliability, security and 'all-weather functionality' requirements. Unfortunately, the technology has been growing at a pace that far exceeds our understanding of the effect of wireless propagation channels on these hybrid systems. The paper attempts to present some of the preliminary propagation measurement results for typical picocell scenarios and their impact on the design of hybrid communication systems. In addition to clear-sky and rain attenuation measurements, the paper presents frequency diversity measurements for fixed RF systems at the 38 GHz and 60 GHz frequency bands.
