Noble metal nanoparticles/carbon nanotubes nanohybrids: Synthesis and applications

Since the discovery of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), they have drawn considerable research attention and have shown great potential application in many fields due to their unique structural, mechanical, and electronic properties However, their native insolubility severely holds back the process of application In order to overcome this disadvantage and broaden the scope of their application, chemical functionalization of CNTs has attracted great interest over the past several decades and produced various novel hybrid materials with specific applications Notably, the rapid development of functionalized CNTs used as electrochemical sensors has been successfully witnessed In this featured article, the recent progress of electrochemical sensors based on functionalized CNTs is discussed and classified according to modifiers covering organic (oxygen functional groups, small organic molecules, polymers, DNA, protein, etc), inorganic (metal nanoparticles, metal oxide, etc) and organic–inorganic hybrids By employing some representative examples, it will be demonstrated that functionalized CNTs as templates, carriers, immobilizers and transducers are promising for the construction of electrochemical sensors

Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) have garnered significant interest as a promising analytical platform in the past decade. Compared with traditional microfluidics, μPADs present unique advantages, such as easy fabrication using established patterning methods, economical cost, ability to drive and manipulate flow without equipment, and capability of storing reagents for various applications. This Review aims to provide a comprehensive review of the field, highlighting fabrication methods available to date with their respective advantages and drawbacks, device designs and modifications to accommodate different assay needs, detection strategies, and the growing applications of μPADs. Finally, we discuss how the field needs to continue moving forward to realize its full potential.

Microfluidic Paper-Based Analytical Devices: From Design to Applications.

The electrochemical and electrocatalytic behaviour of silver nanoprisms, nanospheres and nanocubes of comparable size in an alkaline medium have been investigated to ascertain the shape dependent behaviour of silver nanoparticles, which are an extensively studied nanomaterial. The nanomaterials were synthesised using chemical methods and characterised with UV-visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The nanomaterials were immobilised on a substrate glassy carbon electrode and characterised by cyclic voltammetry for their surface oxide electrochemistry. The electrocatalytic oxidation of hydrazine and formaldehyde and the reduction of hydrogen peroxide were studied by performing cyclic voltammetric and chronoamperometric experiments for both the nanomaterials and a smooth polycrystalline macrosized silver electrode. In all cases the nanomaterials showed enhanced electrocatalytic activity over the macro-silver electrode. Significantly, the silver nanoprisms that are rich in hcp lamellar defects showed greater activity than nanospheres and nanocubes for all reactions studied.
