▪ Abstract Interaction of a vortex, or combinations of them, with a cylinder, blade, or foil may involve both rapid distortion of the incident vorticity field and shedding of vorticity from the surface of the body. This review focuses on the underlying flow physics, with the aim of clarifying the origin of the induced loading. In the case of near or direct encounter of the incident vortex, the relation between three-dimensional features of the flow structure and the local loading poses interesting challenges for further research. With recently developed simulation and laboratory techniques, opportunities now exist to determine the instantaneous quantitative structure of these complex distortions and to interpret them within a theoretical, vorticity-based framework. Effective control of vortex interactions appears to be attainable. It will be necessary, however, to develop creative strategies, distinct from those traditionally employed for control of unstable shear flows.

Modern helicopter rotor aerodynamics

▪ Abstract Modern helicopter aerodynamics is challenging because the flow field generated by a helicopter is extremely complicated and difficult to measure, model, and predict; moreover, experiments are expensive and difficult to conduct. In this article we discuss the basic principles of modern helicopter aerodynamics. Many sophisticated experimental and computational techniques have been employed in an effort to predict performance parameters. Of particular interest is the structure of the rotor wake, which is highly three-dimensional and unsteady, and the rotor-blade pressure distribution, which is significantly affected by the strength and position of the wake. We describe the various modern methods of computation and experiment which span the range from vortex techniques to full three-dimensional Navier-Stokes computations, and from classical probe methods to laser velocimetry techniques. Modern helicopter aerodynamics

A three-dimensional parallel Euler flow solver has been developed for the simulation of unsteady rotor-fuselage interaction aerodynamics on unstructured meshes. In order to handle the relative motion between the rotor and the fuselage, the flow field was divided into two zones, a moving zone rotating with the blades and a stationary zone containing the fuselage. A sliding mesh algorithm was developed for the convection of the flow variables across the cutting boundary between the two zones. A quasi-unsteady mesh adaptation technique was adopted to enhance the spatial accuracy of the solution and to better resolve the wake. A low Mach number pre-conditioning method was implemented to relieve the numerical difficulty associated with the low-speed forward flight. Validations were made by simulating the flows around the Georgia Tech configuration and the ROBIN fuselage. It was shown that the present method is efficient and robust for the prediction of complicated unsteady rotor-fuselage aerodynamic interaction phenomena.

Simulation of unsteady rotor-fuselage aerodynamic interaction using unstructured adaptive meshes

The vortex–body interaction problem, which characterizes the flow field of a rudder placed downstream of a single-blade marine rotor, is investigated by numerical simulations. The particular topology of the propeller wake, consisting of a helicoidal vortex detached from the blade tips (tip vortex) and a longitudinal, streamwise oriented vortex originating at the hub (hub vortex), embraces two representative mechanisms of vortex–body collisions: the tip vortices impact almost orthogonally to the mean plane, whereas the hub vortex travels in the mean plane of the wing (rudder), perpendicularly to its leading edge. The two vortices evolve independently only during the approaching and collision phases. The passage along the body is instead characterized by strong interaction with the boundary layer on the rudder and is followed by reconnection and merging in the middle and far wake. The features of the wake were investigated by the -criterion (Jeong & Hussain, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 285, 1995, pp. 69–94) and typical flow variables (pressure, velocity and vorticity) of the instantaneous flow field; wall pressure spectra were analysed and related to the tip and hub vortices evolution, revealing a non-obvious behaviour of the loading on the rudder that can be related to undesired unsteady loads.

Analysis of the flow field around a rudder in the wake of a simplified marine propeller

To compute the aerodynamics of a rotorcraft in low-speed flight, the interaction of the strong vortices in the rotor wake with the airframe must be modeled. Using a hemisphere-cylinder airframe and a two-bladed rotor for reference, the various phenomena encountered during such interactions are summarized, combining previous results on various configurations with recent experimental results. Differences between the interaction at the front and aft portions of the wake are discussed. The precollision phase conforms to expectations from potential flow, and includes distortion of the vortex trajectory determined by the sense of rotation of the vortex. The collision phase involves complex boundary-layer interactions. The axial velocity in the vortex core causes substantial asymmetry and influences the surface pressure distribution on the airframe side under the advancing rotor blade, where the axial flow stagnates. The postinteraction vortex is much weaker, but still contains some swirl energy. Where flow separation occurs due to airframe shapes, the interaction is not modified significantly, because the vortex dominates the interaction with separated shear layers for parameter values of practical interest. Areas of remaining uncertainty are discussed.
