Light-Emitting Self-Assembled Materials Based on d(8) and d(10) Transition Metal Complexes.

The invention of the scanning tunneling microscope has led to the visualization of molecules in real space on atomically flat conductive substrates. This has boosted research into supramolecular chemistry on surfaces. In this Review, we highlight recent developments in the design and functionality of supramolecular surface patterns, with special attention paid to those networks which are chiral or contain a high degree of porosity as well as to the reactivity, which is one of the most important recent developments in supramolecular surface chemistry.

Molecular and Supramolecular Networks on Surfaces: From Two-Dimensional Crystal Engineering to Reactivity

Propelling magnetism: Supramolecular organization leads to a remarkable dodecanuclear {Cu(3)Dy(3)}(2) cluster with a "double-propeller" shape (see picture). The linkages of the CuDy units, both intramolecular and supramolecular, appear to be responsible for a drastic change in the single molecule magnetic behavior.

Supramolecular “Double‐Propeller” Dimers of Hexanuclear CuII/LnIII Complexes: A {Cu3Dy3}2 Single‐Molecule Magnet

This article describes the most recent developments in the synthesis of three-dimensional π-conjugated molecules and the elucidation of their properties made by our research group. Various cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) of different sizes and a cage-like 3D molecule were synthesized based on the platinum-mediated assembly of π-units and subsequent reductive elimination of platinum. The assembly of π-units by this method mimics the self-assembly process for the formation of supramolecular ligand-metal complexes with 3D cages and polyhedral structures. Furthermore, reductive elimination of platinum successfully took place with high efficiency, despite the high strain energy of the target molecule. Several size-dependent physical properties of CPPs, namely the photophysical, redox, and host-guest chemistries, were also clarified. These results are of use for a molecular-level understanding of CNT physical properties as well as fullerene peapods. Theoretical and electrochemical studies suggest that small CPPs and their derivatives should be excellent lead compounds for molecular electronics.
