Improved technique of heart transplantation in rats.

Liver allografting experiments with pigs show that animals given no immunosuppression will survive for prolonged periods with orthotopic liver transplants. Similar animals can reject skin, kidneys and hearts rapidly. Orthotopic and accessory heterotopic liver allografts protect preferentially from rejection grafts of donor specific skin, kidney and possibly heart. Injected soluble liver antigen may also protect donor specific tissue from rejection. It is suggested that allogeneic liver can induce immunological tolerance in immunologically mature pigs.

Induction of Immunological Tolerance by Porcine Liver Allografts

The hemodynamic and metabolic effects of a total sympathetic block and of the infusion of l-epinephrine or l-norepinephrine were studied in 27 euthyroid dogs and in 31 thyroid-fed dogs. The physiologic changes produced by increased concentrations of the thyroid hormones were abolished by preventing the reflex release of epinephrine and norepinephrine with a total sympathetic block. The inotropic, chronotropic and calorigenic effects of l-epinephrine and of l-norepinephrine were found to be increased by thyroid feeding. It is concluded that there is a dynamic interrelationship between the thyroid hormones and those of the adrenal medulla and sympathetic nerve endings. The hemodynamic and metabolic changes of thyrotoxicosis are not the result of the isolated activity of the thyroid hormones, but rather are due to the physiologic effects of epinephrine and norepinephrine, as augmented by the thyroid hormones. The subject of transplantation of various tissues or organs is important, since great practical value might come from the development of a successful method. This applies particularly to the transplantation of an organ such as the kidney, whereby a normal organ might be exchanged for a diseased one. A comprehensive review of the subject of transplantation of tissue has been made recently by Loeb, 1 and we shall, therefore, mention only a few considerations which are pertinent to our report. Two methods have been used for the transplantation of tissue. The method usually employed both clinically and experimentally has been to excise a small section of tissue and to implant it in the desired situation, expecting it to obtain its own blood supply.
