Towards transport-layer mobility: Evolution of SCTP multihoming

Future Internet (FI) scenarios envisage ubiquitous broadband coverage and seamless mobility, enabling the availability of personalized network connectivity at all places and with a high quality of service (QoS). In such a heterogeneous and complex environment, vertical handover (VHO) management is key for achieving the connectivity objectives, but also presents several challenges. In surveying this topic, this paper takes a direction that extends the state-of-the-art: By incorporating concepts of autonomic network management (ANM), in particular the self-management and cognitive functionalities therein, to VHO management, this paper sheds new light to VHO operations from an ANM point of view, encompassing FI environments and the emerging fifth generation networks. In doing so, the survey identifies the main concepts and provides a taxonomy of relevant architectural components. Based on this taxonomy, a number of important autonomic features are identified, each one promoting the system’s self-optimization along a certain direction toward the overall enhancement of the VHO operations. Another contribution of this paper is the consideration of robustness in VHO decision making (i.e., achieving stable decisions under uncertainty) and a discussion of the relation between robustness factors and the autonomic features previously introduced. The general concepts developed in this paper are applied to representative state-of-the-art handover management solutions with autonomic characteristics. These specific solutions are presented, analyzed, and correlated according to the proposed taxonomy and criteria, culminating to conclusions that provide useful insights toward future, further enhanced solutions.

Autonomic Handover Management for Heterogeneous Networks in a Future Internet Context: A Survey

In this paper we present a common triggering mechanism (cross-layer framework) and logic to gather link state and quality related information from the link layers of different access technologies. This information may he utilized by upper layer protocols and applications to react to changes of the link layer. Examples of such a utilization is movement detection, handover decision and application adaptation. The access technology dependent events and parameters, when necessary, are converted into access technology independent triggers and hints. The presented prototype architecture, link information provider (LIP), is currently tested with the VERHO vertical handover controller, which enables intelligent policy-based handover decisions according to several input parameters from the user, application, link layer, etc. Currently, LIP supports certain general link layer parameters, which can he gathered from the operating system and network interface drivers. Using link layer information for improving vertical handovers

In this paper, a proof-of-concept and a software architecture, M4 (MultiMedia Mobility Manager), is presented. In short, M4 is offering seamless mobility management to multimedia applications using a variety of wireless access networks. First, M4 is built on multihomed Mobile IP building on the principle of soft handovers. Second, network selection in M4 is based on a network layer metric combining round-trip times and jitter in round-trip times. Third, the end-user can enter its own preferences on network selection through a policy-based extension to the proposed network selection algorithm.The proposed architecture is evaluated in a live heterogeneous networking environment where handover performance is studied in detail. In addition, user-perceived quality of experience for Voice over IP using the M4 software architecture has been studied. Last, downloads of large amount of data using a combination of high and low capacity wireless networks in M4 were studied.Results indicate that the architecture as a whole and the proposed algorithms perform well. M4 can thus be seen as an implementation of the "Always Best Connected" vision.

Intelligent Vertical Handover System for Mobile Clients

We introduce mechanisms, which offer soft handover support between two different IP subnets for the mobile devices. The mobility support protocol that was developed tries to solve the same problem as mobile IP, that is, how to manage up to date information about the location of a moving node and to keep its connections established during its movement. It uses soft handover and relies on accurate routing information of routers participating in the protocol. The protocol works entirely in user space (layer 7, 6 and 5 of the OSI model) and considers the handover only in layer 3.
