A system and method for wireless communication between a plurality of subscriber units and a base station, the base station communicating information signals from an originating source to a destination subscriber unit over a channel at an assigned one of a plurality of frequencies using repetitive time frames, each said time frame comprising a sequence of time slots. The channel is defined as having the same one or more time slots from the sequence of time slots in one or more of the time frames. The base station includes a central processing unit capable of assigning a duration of time for the information signals being sent to the destination subscriber unit. The duration equals the duration of one or more time slots in the same frame. The central processing unit maintains a memory of which time slots of each time frame have been assigned and provides the time slot assignment, and therefore channel assignment, by consulting said memory. The system includes a multiplexer for multiplexing the information signals onto the assigned channel; and a transmitter for transmitting the information signals to the destination subscriber unit using the assigned channel.

Subscriber RF telephone system for providing multiple speech and/or data signals simultaneously over either a single or a plurality of RF channels

Providing voice and data communications to people away from their wireline telephones has become a major communication frontier. This frontier is being penetrated by evolving approaches to portable communications, e.g., cordless telephones, mobile radiotelephone, and radio paging. However, these approaches have many limitations; none can provide universal portable communications services. This paper discusses limitations of the evolving approaches and considers objectives and approaches for providing more universal digital portable communications as an integrated part of telephone exchange networks. These more universal communications could be accomplished by using demand-assigned radio links for the last thousand feet or so of telephone loops and sharing the remainder of the fixed distribution facilities. Fixed radio ports as integrated parts of telephone distribution networks could be placed throughout service regions. Efficient use of the radio spectrum could be insured by the planned reuse of radio frequencies throughout the regions. The severe multipath radio propagation environment within and around buildings that strongly influences the design of portable communications systems is described in the paper. System configurations and radio link techniques, that can provide reliable communications in the multipath environment, are discussed. Radio system calculations are illustrated for radio ports with 30-ft-high antennas in residential areas. The calculations indicate that radio link availability would be greater than 99 percent for 2000-ft port separations and 5-mW portable transmitters. Reuse of frequencies would require dividing the allocated frequency band into segments for use at adjacent ports. Calculations suggest that link availability in the cochannel interference environment would be greater than 99 percent, if 25 to 35 segments were used in residential areas.

Universal digital portable radio communications

We address the problem of learning an efficient and adaptive physical layer encoding to communicate binary information over an impaired channel. In contrast to traditional work, we treat the problem an unsupervised machine learning problem focusing on optimizing reconstruction loss through artificial impairment layers in an autoencoder (we term this a channel autoencoder) and introduce several new regularizing layers which emulate common wireless channel impairments. We also discuss the role of attention models in the form of the radio transformer network for helping to recover canonical signal representations before decoding. We demonstrate some promising initial capacity results from this approach and address remaining challenges before such a system could become practical.

Learning to communicate: Channel auto-encoders, domain specific regularizers, and attention

Computing, communication, and relevant standards are on the brink of enabling thousands of people to enjoy the services offered by large, distributed multimedia systems in their own homes. Collectively, these services will include TV (basic, subscription, and pay-per-view), service navigator, interactive entertainment, digital audio, video-on-demand, home shopping, financial transactions, interactive single- and multiuser games, digital multimedia libraries, and electronic versions of newspapers, magazines, TV program guides, and yellow pages. It is obvious that current TV systems and architectures must be redesigned to support such services. In this article, we propose potential solutions to modify existing systems to support these new functions, and we discuss related matters. >

Design issues for interactive television systems

This paper is concerned with clock and carrier synchronization in digital satellite transmissions, using the delay-line multiplier circuit. For clock recovery from baseband signal, with random data, a closed form formula is derived which gives the spectrum after multiplication, for any arbitrary pulse shape. This spectrum contains spectral lines at the clock frequency and its harmonics, and a continuous part which is the pattern noise. This pattern noise may be decomposed in noise in phase with the recovered clock, and noise in quadrature whose power spectral density is always zero at zero frequency. The effect of Gaussian noise on the channel is taken into account to calculate signal-to-noise ratio at the clock frequency as a function of the classical parameter E/N_{o} . With a modulated input carrier, the signal at the output of the delay-line multiplier may be separated into two parts: a low frequency signal that contains clock information and a bandpass spectrum signal around twice the carrier frequency that contains carrier information, when possible. Spectrum and signal-to-noise ratio in carrier recovery are studied for BPSK and offset quadrature modulation.

Performances of the Delay-Line Multiplier Circuit for Clock and Carrier Synchronization in Digital Satellite Communications

This paper describes and summarizes the characteristics of the modulation techniques most applicable to digital radio. The modulation techniques discussed are on-off-keying (OOK) with coherent and noncoherent detection, quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), quadrature partial response (QPR), frequency-shift-keying (FSK) with noncoherent detection, continuous phase FSK (CP-FSK) with coherent and noncoherent detection, minimum-shift-keying (MSK), binary and quaternary phase-shift-keying (BPSK, QPSK) with coherent and differentially coherent detection, offset-keyed QPSK (OK-QPSK), M -ary PSK with coherent detection ( M = 8, 16 ), and 16-ary amplitude and phase-shift-keying (APK). Functional descriptions of these schemes are provided and their performance is compared in a series of tables summarizing the results of the literature of the past 20 years. The modulation schemes are compared with respect to ideal (white Gaussian noise) performance, spectral properties, signaling speed, complexity, and the effects on performance of interference, fading and delay distortion.
